What's all the racket?

What's all the racket at Vanguard these days? It would appear to be table tennis.

Six years ago, our own resident PE and health teacher who's been at Vanguard for seven years, Mr. Tedd Markos built two homemade ping pong tables out of plywood and pretty soon students began to play during lunch and whenever they had free time. And before you know it, the ping pong club and the Golden Paddle Tournament was born, and it is still in full swing. Today, the Golden Paddle Tournament is in its sixth year with a record-breaking 29 contestants and a new champion will emerge this month.

"IT'S FANTASTIC,” said, A.J. Bays, a strong and fierce competitor, and quite possibly the first female champion regarding the craze.

Over the years at Vanguard ping pong became more and more popular and the number of students who played greatly increased. It then was obvious that we needed more tables. After six years of using the same tables much change was much needed.

Mr. Markos, being the avid ping pong fan he is, joined a ping pong league this year and pretty soon his league became sponsored by the company Killerspin, one of the largest ping pong equipment, clothing, and accessories distributors in the world, whose products can be found in 14 different continents. So you can guess what happened next. Killerspin now sponsors Vanguard's table tennis club.

"I'm extremely psyched, it sounds like Markos is very passionate about the sport of ping pong and its involvement at Vanguard. I am very thankful that Markos puts in a lot of time and effort into Vanguard's very local ping pong club," said Thad Struggles, reigning golden paddle champion.

Mr. Markos wrote a killer letter to Killerspin informing them of our growing ping pong culture. He then came in touch with the programs and product development director; Rajeev Sharma and through a stroke of luck he agreed to sponsor our club, give us free equipment, and he also plans to send in professional players to visit the school.

"It's going be sweet, we're going to have fun and I'm going to beat Thad," said Kenzo Yoshimura, a fearless competitor who's in it to win it.

We received new tables courtesy of the company and they will be put to good use in our golden paddle tournament, which began January 25.

"It's super cool, props to Mr. Markos. This the most dedicated, competitive, and fun year of ping pong I've been involved in, " said Mr. Impastato, music/ping pong club emperor.

At the time of publication, AJ Bays, Angie Mazanova, Pete Miller, Chris Kopec, Yoshimura are contenders to win, according to Mr. Markos. Thad Struggles plans to return for an exhibition game against the winner since he graduated last month. The teacher bracket favorite at this time is Mr. Kain.

An addition to the Vanguard Staff

It has been confirmed by District 214 that Sharyn Marsh of Elk Grove High School will be taking Mr. O’Brien’s place as director of Vanguard next year. The district created a new position called Director of Alternative Programs. Ms. Marsh will oversee Young Adult Program. It is unclear if she is overseeing Forest View Alternative School as well.

“I think she’ll be a great director and I’m so excited to see her here,” says former Elk Grove student AJ Bays.

Ms. Marsh is currently Dean of Students and Division Head for PE, Health and Driver Ed at Elk Grove High School.

Our beloved sub Michael Koralik also was a substitute teacher and did some work at Elk Grove. There, he got the chance to work for Ms. Marsh. He said Ms. Marsh was great to work with. Also, he said his brother Jeff was Ms. Marsh’s PE student back in the day at Rolling Meadows. He also felt she was a great person and teacher.

Mr. O’Brien doesn’t know much about Ms. Marsh and has yet to meet her. “She’s highly regarded at Elk Grove and was picked out of a pool of strong candidates,” said Mr. O’Brien.

“I’ve met her two times, and she seemed nice,” said Mr. Markos.

“ My main goals for Vanguard are to learn about the current program and lead the staff in assuring the program meets the needs of our students in preparing them for their future,” said Ms. Marsh.

“I’m optimistic. Life will be different but good next year,” said Dr. Koralik.

We look forward to getting to know Ms. Marsh next year.

Staff have been playing practical jokes on Mr. Kain since the mouse incident last week.

Mice have invaded Vanguard.

Last week, mice decided to make a nice, little home inside a Girl Scout cookie box in Mr. Kain's desk drawer. He said he opened the box one day and three (alive) baby mice fell out. According to Mr. Kain, Mr. O’Brien fed the mice to his snakes located in the Media Room. "It's not fair to a mouse to be thrown in a tank. It's unethical and unnatural. At least in nature they have a chance," said an infuriated Ms. DeMeo.

“There has been more evidence of mice since then,” says Mr. Kain.

Teachers and some students would like to keep this place clean, and mice free. Lunch ends at noon so by that time all food, wrappers, and drinks should be picked up and tossed in the garbage.

“Exterminators told us that under my desk is a prime time spot for mice to make a nest, so I cleaned it,” said Ms. O’Neill. She had camping equipment and clothing under the desk. It's been there for years in case students need stuff for trips or outfit changes for service learning.

Every day, there seems to be more and more garbage around the school. Some teachers and students are angered by these rude acts. Ms. Felfle stated, “What I would like to do is take the garbage students leave behind and put it in their houses. Let’s see how they feel!”

Witnesses report that Chris Przybylo, Evan Jakubowicz, Nick Bowden, Essence Herman, Nicole Giannini and Stephani Ortiz are chronic offenders. They all refused to make a comment for the blog at this time.

“I’ve been called a mother before but I’m nobody’s mom. Clean up your own mess!” Words of wisdom from Pasta.

Let's keep our school clean or we'll lose the privilege to eat food around here.

Service makes a difference

The year is coming to an end! All students' last day of service is this Friday. Students shared memories and things they've learned at their service sites during team this morning.

"Service may be over on June 3, but that does not mean girls can wear short-shorts! Please keep those short shorts for the weekend," said Ms. O'Neill.

The group of students and teachers that were supposed to go on a camping trip to Indiana went on a bike riding trip to Chicago today. They wheeled around Lake Michigan. We can't wait to hear all about it when they get back!

"It was so refreshing. I got to feel the wind blow in my hair all day instead of sitting in Room 4," says Ms. DeMeo.

Bike the Drive is this weekend downtown if anyone is interested. Service and PE points will be awarded. Go to bikethedrive.org.

Times they are a-changin'

A new director, a new group of students, and increased skills-based ACT/test prep. Vanguard's 2011-2012 school year is filled with new opportunities and experiences that will get kids better prepared for the future.

Students are reacting in all sorts of ways about the longer school day. “It’s not a big deal. It’s just an hour!” says Alex Kresen.

Next year, the school day will end at 3:00 instead of 2:05 to "increase academic time for students," according to Mr. Kosirog. Staff are holding meetings after school to work out the schedule. Fear not, Harper, cosmetology school, nail school, PAC, and all service sites will not be affected by the new agenda.

The change from 2:00 to 2:05 earlier in the year was already a hard adaptation for Vanguard students. "I think it's going to be hard on the students, not teachers. Our school day ends at 3:30 regardless. We'll adjust. It'll be okay," said Ms. DeMeo.

Students aren’t taking the news as lightly. Almir Dekanovic says, “It’s going to be very depressing because this school always ended at 2:00. This is a drag.”

Wheeling and Buffalo Grove kids take longer to get home than others. Kayla Woodward sits on the bus for a total of almost an hour and a half some days. She fears with the later days she will get home very late. “Buses will be added to the routes so kids won’t get home as late,” according to O’Brien.

This news is starting up conflict for many working students. “It’s going to be a problem for some kids. Some have to get to work right after 2:00,” stated Dr. Koralik.

“I don’t think it’s fair. That’s the point of Vanguard, we’re supposed to be different than other schools. Now we’re going to be in school almost the same amount of time and we travel further,” said Danielle Pettibone.

One proposed schedule sets aside time a couple times a week to do extra PE and clubs for students who are on track, according to Ms. O’Neill.

“It’ll be interesting to see how Vanguard maintains its culture in terms of its after school activities and clubs which have always been done after school,” says Ms. Felfle.

Vanguard gives a helping hand

Vanguard students are stepping up after over 67 tornadoes struck in just this past week. The worst tornado of them all hit Sunday night at 6 PM; it destroyed over half of Joplin, Missouri. 132 people are dead, and 156 are still missing.

This heartbreaking news hit home to many Vanguard students. Four students in particular wanted to step up and do something about it. What started out as a health class project quickly turned into a school fundraiser.

Angie Mazanova, Eli Martinez, AJ Bays, and Kayla Woodward put together a project in hopes to raise money and supplies for the victims of the tornado. Eli and AJ stood in front of the school at big team this morning and presented a devastating Power Point. It consisted of an aerial view of the tornados path, a video of the actual tornado, and pictures of the destroyed community. Minutes after the presentation, Vanessa Cardona jumped in to help the cause. “I’m going to make an add about the Joplin tornado so we can get Forestview to help us with our donations,” said Vanessa.

Every pair of eyes in the room was glued to the screen as they watched what it was like for these people to loose everything in the snap of a finger. A choked up Ms. O’Neill shared that a few of her friends’ homes were destroyed in this natural disaster. “Vanguard students and their compassion has really brought my friend and his family hope during an extremely rough time.”

“We’re trying to make students aware. A lot of kids didn’t know about the tornado until Wednesday. We’re trying to tell them how much Joplin needs help and how much the donations we can give mean to people down there,” stated Kayla Woodward.

Any one and every one can do a little something to help raise money for Joplin citizens. A list was passed out during big team that consists of supplies that can be donated. There is also a can next to the coffee cart for money donations. If a student needs to borrow a writing utensil, they will face a fee. The money will be given to Joplin.

Every penny counts. As of this afternoon, Vanguard raised over 40 dollars. Students hope to make this an all-building fundraiser.

“Seeing the images of devastation reinforces how grateful I am for all of the things that I do have and it makes all the little things in life that I stress about seem insignificant,” stated Ms. Felfe.

Who's the boss?

We know for sure Mr. O'Brien's picture will be hanging with the other former directors next year. But who will sit in his chair?

Rumors have been flooding around Vanguard for months that our director Michael O'Brien will not be returning next year. These rumors were confirmed last Monday at Big Team when O'Brien announced his July 1st resignation to the students.

According to the District 214 homepage, Dr. Charles Johns, principal of Rolling Meadows High School, is supposed to fill O'Brien's position for the 2011-2012 school year. I met with Dr. Johns in late January and we discussed his goals and objectives for next school year. He expressed much excitement in joining the Vanguard family. I am waiting to hear back from him.

"Dr. Johns took a new position as Assistant Superintendent in Elmhurst," said Mr. O'Brien. Students and staff are now again wondering, who will be director next year? The district will be holding interviews for the new Director of Alternative Schools. Rumor has it that interviews are being held this week. Some sources say we should have a new director by mid-June.

This back and fourth is taking a toll on staff and students. "As a staff, we were informed in January that Dr. Johns was coming here. We did preparations with him, and now it's lost time. It's sort of frustrating," stated Mr. Heldmann. Also, Ms. O'Neill aired concern Vanguard summer school will be difficult to run without an administrator. Mr. O'Brien will run summer school completion for Vanguard until July 1.

Randy Hawley, Associate Superintendent of Human Resources, was not available for questions. He is currently on vacation.

Even though next year's director is nonexistent at the moment, students and staff are holding their heads high. "I believe this isn't what O'Brien wanted right now, but something good will come of it. He'll be better off in the long run," shared Dr. Koralik.

"Dr. Johns must have taken one look inside, seen the students and bolted," joked student Thad Struggles. In all seriousness, Thad believes everything will work out for the best but he mentioned that he and his family will miss Mr. O'Brien.

Canoe or not canoe, that is the question.

Vanguard's camping trip to Marshall, Indiana was canceled last month due to bad weather. Campers were let down, but Mr. Markos planned the same trip to leave tomorrow morning.

But because of a tornado warning in Indiana, a possible earthquake in Iowa, and more, the trip may not go on.

"As of right now, the trip is still on," says Mr. Markos. He is currently looking for a safe place to camp in any neighboring state. He will keep us updated throughout the day.

The camping trip was ultimately canceled because of bad weather. No word yet on when or if it will be rescheduled.

Instead of going to Indiana, students will attend an all-day local trip during school on Friday. Mr. Markos doesn't know where they will be going yet.

Marilyn Medina-Perez is Vanguard’s new social worker. This is her first year and she’s a huge hit with all the students. Ms. Medina-Perez was named Illinois’ 2010 School Social Worker of the Year. Besides her love for chocolate, helping adolescents is her passion.

AMS: What’s your most embarrassing moment?
MMP: I have so many embarrassing moments. I can’t name just one.

AMS: If you could time travel, what year would you go to?
MMP: I would probably go to Europe during the jazz era.

AMS: If you were stranded on a tropical island, what are three things you would bring with you?
MMP: I’d bring my husband, a lighter and chocolate.

AMS: What’s your best high school memory?

MMP: All my friends and I went to Michigan Avenue in our dresses after prom. It was great.

AMS: Where do you see yourself in fifteen years?

MMP: I hope I’ll be considering retirement and focusing on opening my own therapy practice.

AMS: What’s your dugout song?
MMP: “We will rock you” by Queen.

AMS: Who would play you in a movie of your life?
MMP: Penelope Cruz would play me.

AMS: What dance describes you?
MMP: The Salsa and The Tango. They have so much history.

AMS: If you were on death row, what would be your last supper?

MMP: I’d have steak with sweet potato casserole with a double fudge chocolate cake from Portillo’s.

AMS: Do you have Beiber Fever?

MMP: No. He doesn’t draw me.

Reach Out A Hand To Save Lives-By Angie Mazanova

On Sunday, May 2nd, 2011, a horrible tragedy occurred. One of the deadliest tornado's took lives of 90 people. The damage is heartbreaking. Almost everything is lost. And now, these people have nothing. We as a community can give them hope. American Red Cross Association has established many ways of help. The choices stand between donation of money, donation of blood or volunteer work. If we as a family give at least an hour of our time, we can bring life and hope to so many people. The biggest concern isn't even about their houses or their cars. It's about food, water, shelter, love and care. This is our wake up call. Imagine what it would be like to be in those people's shoes. What would it be like to look at life in a different way? What would it feel like to breathe in your first breath of air after going through such a horrifying experience. We can do this together. We can reach out one hand to save the lives of thousands.

Recently, there was a massive tornado that hit the town of Joplin, Missouri killing 89 people. It was a tragedy that spoke volumes. Houses were reduced to rubble and the whole town was just torn to shreds. It is not only sad to witness the aftermath, but it makes your heart sink. No one deserves to go through any of that. The human race as a species is quite complicated, but there comes a time in life where you have to completely set everything aside and unite for a greater good. I, for one, have values, I stand for something and that is to be the person you possibly can be. It's hard to have hope when everything and everyone around you seems so negative, but there is no reason to ever do so.
While Joplin was being completely destroyed, I had a life-changing experience while working in the rain with a friend. A car stopped, a lady named Susan and her son offered us a ride home. I felt a huge amount of gratitude, I felt like I almost wanted to hug her and cry. I just had to walk in the rain, but could you imagine how those people in Joplin might feel if we could help, even in the slightest way?
I propose we hold a concert. We have so many talented musicians. All the proceeds should benefit the victims of this devastating tornado. I stand for all that is good in the universe. There has to be a difference. Vanguard can make a difference. Something must be done. What do you stand for?

The tornado that demolished Joplin and left the majority of its population both grief and poverty stricken was the worst natural disaster the U.S had experienced since the tragedy of hurricane Katrina. Even a hardened reporter was brought to tears by the heart wrenching event. In times like this when a community is stripped of almost everything they held dear what's needed most is kindness and humanity. The storm was reviewed and broadcasted across the nation and as such there shouldn't be anyone not informed. The people may know but most won't go out of their way to help unless it was made convenient enough. I propose a paypal account be made to help fund Joplin reconstruction and aid the survivors. Perhaps we can donate to United Way or the Red Cross. Maybe we could even adopt a family.

Spring Field Trips

Integrated took a trip to "Area 51" in Busse Woods to clean up.

A group of students took a field trip to the Shedd Aquarium to draw, photograph, and create art of the jellyfish in the new exhibit "Jellies."

Sabrina Cuevas, AJ Bays, Lisa Loeffler, and Ms. DeMeo are amazed by the exhibit.

The whole school will be taking a trip to the Brookfield Zoo for the Integrated's endangered species and environment unit on June 7th.

Goodbye, Mr. Stern!

It’s rare when student teachers choose to do their assignment at Vanguard School. Mr. Stern is one of only six in Vanguard’s 15 years, according to Ms. O’Neill. “He’s pretty hardcore,” says Eli Martinez.

New student Paige Fuentes said, “Oh my gosh, I didn’t even realize he was a student teacher. I thought he was always here.” The truth is he’s only been here since January, but it feels like he’s always been a permanent part of the Vanguard family. Stern’s done more than taught classes. He’s organized trips, gone to Treehaven, and even dominated our 3-on-3 basketball tournament in February.

Andy Stern is an English and Education major at U of I at Urbana-Champaign. During his time here, he has taught many English classes either by himself or integrating courses with Ms. O’Neill, Mr. Markos, Ms. DeMeo and Dr. Koralik. He designed an English class about mythology and famous court cases during his time here as well. “I’m really going to miss him. He’s a great teacher,” stated Diana Gonzalez.

Since today is Mr. Stern’s final day here at Vanguard, staff and students gathered in the tech center during team this morning to have cake and say our goodbyes. Student Rachel Reza says, “He was very involved with every student. He interacted with us very well.”

We say goodbye to Mr. Stern with high hopes of seeing him again. “Why is he leaving?” asks Kayla Woodward. “He should come teach here at Vanguard next year.”

Let the shaving begin!

March 17^th wasn’t just St. Patrick’s Day. It was also St. Baldrick’s day.

St. Baldricks Foundation is a non-profit that raises money and awareness for children with cancer. Schools, bars, businesses, and many more take part in this charity by shaving their heads and collecting donations for cancer research.

"It's humbling to know that the work you do on behalf of the St. Baldrick's foundation could ultimately change the course of a child's life," stated Vanguard's coordinator Bobbi Felfle.

Students and staff through out the building gathered in the theater that morning to hear Forest View staff member, Mr. Schwarz, speak on behalf of children around the world battling pediatric cancer. He really opened everyone’s eyes to what a horrible disease cancer is, and what horrific things these small children have to live with on a daily basis. Tears, tension, and applaud filled the room. After all that, the shaving began!

"The only pin I could find was the 'Ask me why I'm bald' pin, not the 'Ask me why my hairline is receding' pin," said Pasta.

Our own Matt Beutel shaved heads along with many other students from Empire Beauty School. Students and staff from around the building flooded through the theatre throughout the day.

"It was really moving to see the sense of community and togetherness on this special day. A real memory maker. Hope we do it every year," said service coordinator Amy O'Neill who shaved her head at the event last year.

The shaving took off.

Rachel Reza cut off a whopping 6.5 inches of her hair and donated it to another organization, Locks of Love, that makes wigs for kids fighting cancer.

Students whose hair wasn't long enough to donate, still showed support by shaving their hair like Hector Martinez.

Matt Beutel got the honor of shaving Mr. Kain's hair.

Vanguard math teacher, Ms. Gregornik-Garcia, chopped off 6 inches of her mane.

Future staff member Dr. Johns showed his St. Baldrick's spirit.

Jessica Oglesby cut off all her hair, leaving just barely one inch.

The final result. Jessica also served as the chairperson of the event as a service project, along with the super assistance of Ms. Felfle.

Hoops for Haiti is a success!

Over 45 students competed in Hoops for Haiti last Friday in the field house. This year made history because not only one team won, but three! Over seven hundred dollars will go to Doctors without Borders, a non-profit organization that treats citizens that were affected by natural disasters in Haiti. Johnny Meyers won the fundraising award by collecting over one hundred dollars in donations.
All Vanguard students and staff all met at 1:30 in the gym to watch the championship games. History was made as the three teams combined to make a 5-on-5 exhibition match. They tied by 2:05. Trophies were awarded today in the tech center during big team.

"I just thought it was awesome how no body cared or complained that there wasn't just one champion. It was a very positive day. Every one was there for the right reasons," says Mr. Markos.

Luis, AJ and Mr. Stern: another winning team. They were a "free-agent team", formed just minutes before their first game. "This team gained a following. It was definitely a Cinderella Story. After other team's games were over, they would run over and watch this team play," says Pasta.

Meet the Staff! 12

Mid-February, about 20 Vanguard students and staff, including myself, traveled up to Baraboo, Wisconsin for a three-day educational field trip in the woods. While there, our guide, John Heusinkveld, opened us up the the beauty of Treehaven’s land. Treehaven is located at a satellite campus for the University of Wisconsin-Stephens Point. It’s a winter wonderland of over 1,400 acres.

John has worked for Treehaven for ten years. He says, “I love the outdoors. When I was little, my friends and I would just go and play in the woods. I believe I was predisposed with fascination to the outdoors.” John’s job at Treehaven includes coordinating educational trips such as the one we took, and educating people on the woods by teaching them in the classroom or taking them on different types of tours around the land. “For me, John was a big part of Treehaven. He taught me so much within those three short days. You could tell how passionate he is about his work and the forest,” says Chris Pehm.

John will be recognized with a 214 Distinguished Service Award because of his dedication to

Vanguard, and will be coming down to accept it March 17at the Board Meeting. Students are invited to attend for the presentation.

Staff members consider John a guest teacher and an honorary member of the Vanguard staff. One staff member said one of the highlights of the yearly trip is getting the chance to spend time with John.

JEH: I don’t embarrass very easily.

JEH: My French class was a great part of my high school career. My teacher really got the class

involved and showed us that learning can be fun. I was also in gymnastics and that was a lot of fun. We went to some pretty big meets.

AMS: If you were stranded on a tropical island what are three things you would bring with you?

JEH: I would bring unlimited food and water, a human companion, and unlimited reading supplies.

AMS: If you could time travel to any year, what year would you go to and why?

JEH: I’d want to go to the year that I was born (1961) to see what the world was like and get a grasp of the people’s perceptions on war, government and environment back then.

AMS: What’s your dugout song?
JEH: Any song by Aerosmith or Van Morrison. They really pumped me up in high school.

AMS: Who would play you in a movie of your life?
JEH: Robin Williams. [Thad agrees]

AMS: If you were on death row what would be your last supper?

JEH: I’d have a Venison back strap braised with olive oil, a thousand peas, and Caverne wine.

AMS: What dance describes you?
JEH: “The Jitter Bug” because I’m always moving until the music is over.

JEH: Uh, no. I seem to be immune.

Start Raising Money for Hoops for Haiti

Clean off your Air Jordans, your Chucks, your LA Gears and get ready, because Hoops For Haiti 3 on 3 tournament is in less than two weeks. The challenge will be all day, Friday, February 25^th.

Throughout the years, teachers and students have teamed up to compete in a championship, which raises money for different causes. This year, the money will go to Doctors Without Borders, which is an organization that provides attention to people affected by the natural disaster in Haiti. Students raised over 800 dollars for last year’s tournament. All the funds went to Doctors Without Borders.

Haiti was struck with a massive earthquake last January. They are now battling cholera, hunger, and violence. According to staff, Vanguard wants to continue to support Haiti since so many have already forgotten.

Last year, over 45 students participated by playing, fundraising or scorekeeping. Luke Maj, Sandra Caldera, and David Rosen won the tournament in a very close game. “Our goal this year is to raise more money than we did last year. $900 would be great,” says Mr. Markos.

Bruno Kelava, 20, participated in the tournament three different years, and won every time. Staff is still deliberating on whether or not he should be eligible. “I think I should still be able to play. It will be a good challenge for the younger kids. If they beat me, their self esteem will go up,” says Bruno. His team is still undecided, if he’s allowed to play.

On the contrary, Mr. Markos says that Bruno is up to 5 years older than some students here and that puts them at an unfair advantage. The decision is ultimately up to him, and he is still undecided.

If you want to join the tournament, talk to Mr. Markos. All checks should be made payable to Doctors Without Borders. Students must raise at least $10 to play.

Bobbi Felfle is one of Vanguard’s instructional assistant. She recently graduated from Roosevelt University with plans to be a history or special ed. teacher. Ms. Felfle takes on a lot of special projects like Market Day which generates a lot of monies for our Student Activities Account. Ms. Felfle tough exterior is balanced by her warmth and attentiveness to students’ needs.

AMS: What’s your most embarrassing moment?

RFF: This one time, I was getting a newspaper out of the machine and the zipper of my coat got stuck. People thought I was trying to steal a newspaper.

AMS: If you could time travel, what year would you go to and why?

RFF: I would go to 45 BC because I would want to spend time with Julius Caesar. He’s my historical hero and I don’t believe he was a tyrant.

AMS: If you were stranded on a tropical island, what are three things you would bring?

RFF: I would bring a lifetime supply of fresh water, my family, and music.

AMS: What’s your best high school memory?

RFF: Graduation because I transferred schools when I moved to South America and I was so far behind that people never thought that I would graduate.

AMS: Where do you see yourself in fifteen years?
RFF: I see myself being able to spend six months out of every year traveling to different places in the world.

AMS: What’s your dream job?

RFF: Editor of Vogue because I love fashion, I love every thing that goes into being a princess, and I think vogue is at the top of that feeding chain.

AMS: What’s your dug out song?

RFF: “Unwell” by Matchbox 20. They’re just fun. I like them.

AMS: Who would play you in a movie of your life?
RFF: Jennifer Lopez.

AMS: What dance describes you?

RFF: The Waltz describes me because it’s elegant.

After graduating from Highland Park High School, Mr. Stern attended (and is still attending) the University of Illinois-Champaign. Before he got his interview here at Vanguard, he says he never really thought about being a teacher at an alternative school but he really enjoys it. Be sure to introduce yourself!

AJS: I was at an overnight camp once, and had to do a skit with my friend. I had to sing “What Dreams Made Of” by Hilary Duff in rhinestone jeans.

AMS: If you could travel in time, what year would you go to?

AJS: I’d go back to the “wild west days” because I like riding horses.

AMS: If you were stranded on a tropical island, what would you bring with you?

AJS: I’d bring food, books, and a cell phone.

AMS: What’s your best high school memory?
AJS: Going to my friend’s summer homes in Wisconsin.

AMS: Where do you see yourself in fifteen years?
AJS: I see myself married with kids, and teaching.

AJS: I want to be a beach bum. I would love to sit in the sun, relax, and not have to worry

about anything. The real world is hard and I’m starting to realize that.

He studied English at University of Iowa, and while looking for a teaching job, he's temporarily subbing. Koralik's days here consist of pretending to be his father. MJK: In seventh grade, I accidentally farted on a desk-chair. (That's like farting off a church pew.) The whole class and teacher turned around and stared at me.

MJK: I'd go to 1992 to watch the Bulls win the 2nd championship against the Trailblazers.

AMS: If you were stranded on a tropical island, what are three things you would bring with you?
MJK: I'd bring a knife, some juice, and beef jerky.

AMS: What's your best high school memory?
MJK: Winning the park district basketball championship. It was a lot of fun.

AMS: Where do you see yourself in fifteen years?
MJK: Being a substitute teacher with six illegitimate children and a pet pony named Rodger who is addicted to cigarettes.

MJK: Writing for the Çhicago Tribune's sports section.

Tedd Markos is Vanguard’s health, Dr. Oz and PE teacher. Markos is currently teaching a new class this tour called Social Health Club, a course also cleverly referred to as Awesome High School Musical featuring Cats. Markos coordinates most camping trips and he said he can’t wait for Treehaven next month. His relaxed attire inspired today’s Track Day. What color tracksuit do you think he will wear on Monday? AMS: What is your most embarrassing moment?

TLM: I’m color blind, and in first grade a drew a picture of a monkey. I drew trees on it too, but accidentally made the leaves brown and the trunk green. I didn’t notice, and gave it to my teacher. I thought it was awesome. She even put it on the board. But then she went on to say how awful it was.

AMS: If you could time travel, what year would you go to?

TLM: I’d go 100 years in the future to see if the Cubs ever win the World Series and to see what the status of the human race is.

AMS: If you were stranded on a tropical island what are 3 things you would bring with you?

TLM: I’d bring a power generator, a jacuzzi, and a hatchet.

AMS: What is your best high school memory?

TLM: Playing hockey for my school all four years. It was really fun and competitive.

TLM: I’d love to run a Greek restaurant, and teach surfing lessons in Costa Rica.

Vipers Hit the Slopes

Friday morning to Saturday afternoon, Vanguard held its first snowboarding trip open to Vipers who are proud to be Drug and Alcohol Free.

The students and staff departed around 8:30 on Friday morning on their way to Portage, Wisconsin's Cascade Resort. Later, the gang headed to their cabin in Warrens, Wisconsin for a night of swimming, watching movies, and relaxing.

Mr. Kain explained the day's schedule to every one.

Instructors split every one up into 3 groups: Beginners, intermediate, and snowboarders.

The snowboarders prepare to go up the slopes for the first time!

Mark Kosirog is our business teacher, math teacher, and technology supervisor. He is also Vanguard’s union representative, and Upward Bound Coordinator. The Spongebob and Simpsons fanatic always has the students best interest in mind, and enjoys challenging the way people think.

AMS: What is your most embarrassing moment?
MCK: During my first real teaching job, I thought I was all organized for my first period class. Turns out, I forgot to Xerox something. So, I ran to the copy room at the side of the school. By the time I got back, I was sweating perfusely. I started to take attendance, and the paper stuck to my arm because I was sweating so much.

AMS: If you could time travel, what year would you go to?
MCK: I would travel back in time so I could be rich. I would bet on things I knew I would win. Also, I would check out famous mysteries, like who shot Kennedy.

AMS: If you were stranded on a tropical island what are 3 things you would bring with you?
MCK: I’d bring my wife, a knife, and bug netting because I hate bugs.

AMS: What is your best high school memory?
MCK: This group came to my school and did “The Curly Shuffle” in our gym. It was really cool.

AMS: Where do you see yourself in fifteen years?
MCK: I see myself having 2 more master degrees, and playing with and spoiling my grandchildren.

AMS: What’s your dream job?
MCK: This is my dream job, I love what I do!

AMS: What’s your dug out song?
MCK: The Rocky Song because it just seems like a song that describes a little guy triumphing over a Jo Shmo.

AMS: Who would play you in a movie of your life?
MCK: Yul Brenner. He’s bald, and has a cool accent.

MCK: The Hokie Pokie because you put your right foot in, you put your right foot out, you put your right foot in, and shake it all about. It’s the only dance I can confidently do.

MCK: I’d have Rosebud’s eggplant salad, Texas De Brazil, and an Oberweis banana split with extra pecans.

At 6 o’clock on Thursday morning, Superintendent Dr. Schuler notified staff via email that District 214 won the Lincoln Foundation’s 2010 Bronze Award for “Commitment to Excellence.”

According to Lincolnaward.org, “The Lincoln Foundation for Performance Excellence is a not-for-profit organization backed by both private and public funding. The Foundation seeks to help Illinois organizations continuously improve their performance by encouraging, developing and highlighting excellence among five sectors: industrial enterprises, service providers, health care organizations, educational institutions, and government agencies.”

Multiple students and teachers within the district were interviewed by the foundation. Lincoln focused on topics such as leadership, communication, finances, goals, and the ultimate results of how the district is run when they are judging for the award.

The Lincoln Foundation’s evaluation team interviewed Mr. O’Brien. He says, “Having a school such as Vanguard in the District shows how invested the district is in the students.”

To even be a contender for an award, you have to apply or be nominated. For this reward, the district applied. The form had to have a five-page maximum profile, a fifty-page maximum application page, and much more.

Though it is not known how the Lincoln Award will impact Vanguard, or any of the schools in particular, the foundation will give the district handy tips of improvement. Associate Superintendent for Educational Services Rosemary Gonzalez-Pinnick says, “This should impact everyone in the district. In January, we will receive a written report judging how we function as a company. We want to be as high functioning as possible.”

According to Director of Staff Support Judith Minor, “This award is notable, and has a high external validation.” Ms. Minor went on to explain how the award is held high in regard, and how momentous this award actually is.

In the past, two service sites received the award, John Jay Elementary School and Forest View Elementary School.

A New Tradition is Born

Vipers successfully completed the Turkey Trot on Wednesday. The busses departed for Busse Woods around noon on Wednesday.

Students Emily Casey, Maria Garcia, David Cordes, and Olivia Gabcova wore their Native American hats while walking.

Mr. Marcos layed out the course to students.

Early finishers formed a bridge and cheered as their fellow students crossed the finish line.

High ropes 2010

Students reach for the sky in high ropes.

Last Wednesday, Team O'Neill and Team Cortes participated in an all day high ropes course in the field house. Mr. Kain, Mr. Marcos, and Mr. Gustafson guided, taught, and helped students complete the course. "High Ropes is a highlight of the year for Team One-ill. Every students from both teams attempted the course!" said Ms. O'Neill.

Before starting, teams did a few team building activities.

The first activity was a name game. Every one would say their name, and a fruit that started with the same letter that their first name did. For example, Alex was "Alex Avacado." The person next to him would have to repeat "Alex Avacado" and make up his own and so on and so on.

Next was a jump rope activity. One after the other, a person would jump through the rope to the other side. If some one messed up or missed their turn, every one had to start over. At first, we couldn't get more than 10 people through. After a few tries, we got over 40 people through in 1 try. It was a great feeling!

Next was another jump rope activity. Now, every one stood in front of the rope and had to jump at the same time. This is more difficult than it looks. The teams brain stormed and tried many different ways of completing the activity.

Not long after we got over 5 jumps!

Finally, it was time to start high ropes! Mr. Marcos went over safety rules with us.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kain went over how to rope yourself into the course so you are always safe.

There was a ground course to get the feel of what you would be doing in the air.

Mr. Patrick Kain has a long history here at Vanguard. He has worked here ever since the school opened in 1997. He has not always been our guidance counselor, camper extrodinairre, and intake director. Back in the day, Mr. Kain filled the position of Vanguard’s P.E. and health teacher. This hard-working, caring man has an essential role at Vanguard everyday.

AMS: What is your most embarrassing moment?
PDK: On my wedding night, I ran to the bathroom. When I got there, I noticed there were all women inside. I stood there for at least 10 seconds, I was so confused! They all laughed, and 2 minutes later, every one was talking about it.

AMS: If you could time travel, what year would you go to?
PDK: I would go back to when I was 3 or 4 to see how my parents raised me. I want to see what we did and where we went. I think it’s because I have small children of my own.

AMS: If you were stranded on a tropical island what are 3 things you would bring with you?
PDK: I’d bring a surf board, my family, and a fishing pole.

AMS: What is your best high school memory?
PDK: I went to state with my soccer team sophomore year. It was exciting, we played in front of over 5,000 people and got 3rd place.

AMS: What’s your dream job?
PDK: Working at Vanguard. And, I love having 3 months off every year. This is the perfect job for me.

AMS: What’s your dug out song?
PDK: Thunderstruck - ACDC. The intro is so cool.

AMS: Who would play you in a movie of your life?
PDK: Lee Dewyze.

AMS: What dance describes you?
PDK: The running man (A Vanilla Ice dance) because I’m a child of the ‘80’s.

PDK: I’d have a burrito from Labamba Burrito.

PDK: Totally not. His lyrics are so 50 years ago.

Vipers Trot on Turkey Day Eve

Over thirty students’ service sites are closed the day before Thanksgiving, so staff thought it a good idea to cancel service for that day to kick off a new holiday tradition.

The day before our short Thanksgiving break, students and staff will be taking a three mile walk/run “Turkey Trot” in Busse Woods.

While walking, we will be cleaning up trash and litter. Ms. O’Neill says, “We want to nurture the relationship we have with the Cook County Forest Preserve.” Every Vanguard student is a member of the Preserve Keeper Corps.

The workout also benefits you! “This is for cardiovascular fitness, and service points,” states Mr. Marcos. Students will be earning up to 8 PE points. That’s close to two weeks of regular PE points.

According to student organizer Olivia Gabcova, students who get into the holiday spirit and dress as turkeys, pilgrims, native Americans, mashed potatoes, or anything related to the holiday, can earn bonus points.

According to staff, this new Turkey Trot tradition was inspired by a celebration students had with Ms. DeMeo and Ms. McCann after they wrote about their Thanksgiving traditions in class last year. Staff learned that some students didn’t celebrate the holiday, and some had no one to share the holiday with.
Many staff shared with me how the holiday season is difficult for many of our students. Ms. O’Neill has high hopes that the Turkey Trot will be a “service oriented, team-building, memory making experience for all.”

Since Chicago weather is bipolar, if there is lightning, we will watch a holiday feel-good film in the theatre. Students will then discuss the film in team. The title has not yet been released.

Vanguard First in District 214 to Eliminate Cabs From Budget

Vanguard recently switched things up a bit in the transportation department. Students who choose to stay after school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays no longer take cabs home. Instead three activity buses take them home. This change was effective October 25.

In the past, students signed up for a cab by noon when they planned to stay after school. Instead, at 3:15 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, there will be three buses outside the building. One goes to the north area of the district, one to the south, and one to the central. Mr. O’Brien says, “The buses are very flexible. If the stop is too far from a students house, we are able to change it.”

In this economy, everyone is trying to save money wherever they can. That’s exactly what District 214 is doing. Eventually, all schools in the district will have switched their cabs to buses. Vanguard was the first to make the movement, according to Mr. O’Brien.

Student Kayla Woodward took the activity bus a few times already and says, “I don’t mind it. The bus driver lets us put on the radio!” She went on to say, “the cabs would drop me off in front of my house. Now, I have to walk a few blocks. It’s not a problem for me, but it will be when it gets colder.”

“I hated the cabs. They would take a group of kids that live in opposite directions, so it took so long to get home. The cab drivers were really awkward, too,” states Maxene Reed.

Ms. Anzalone has the job of setting up cabs or buses, and making sure the students get on them. “Last winter, cabs would come up to forty-five minutes late. The buses are more dependable.”

According to Mr. O’Brien, the cab company Vanguard worked with in the past was not as reliable and efficient as they could have been. “The buses are on a schedule and we trust they will be here,” stated Mr. O’Brien.

RJK: I’ve never had one!

AMS:If you could time travel, what year would you go to?
RJK: 1968. It was the most important year in the last 100. I had just graduated college, it was time to move on. My life was very exciting.

RJK: I’d bring Walden (a book), a can of spam, and my Green Bay Packers hat.

AMS: What is your best high school memory?
RJK: Not going to my swimming class for a whole year and getting an A. I was friends with the teacher’s daughter so I got away with ditching!

AMS: Where do you see yourself in 15 years?
RJK: Sitting on a curb playing harmonica and guitar while wearing my Green Bay Packers hat.

AMS: What’s your dug out song?
RJK: Subterranian Homesick Blues. It’s the story of life. (He made me print out the lyrics and listen to the song during the interview.)

Vanguard protests against gang violence

Vanguard’s Culture Captains take a stand and speak out against gang affiliated violence.

The next “Big team” may be a little more exciting because it’s not Mr. Impastato doing his stand-up comedy routine. Instead, Culture Captains are working on a presentation about Gang Violence. They will perform it for the whole school on December 8. Culture Captain Maria Garcia says, “My goal is to turn on just one light bulb. As long as we get it through one persons head, we accomplished something.” They are also hanging signs and a poster on the walls.

According to FASTEN.com, there are approximately one-million gang members in America, and about forty percent are juveniles. So it’s not a surprise if you know any gang members. Being part of a gang is a high-risk situation. Every part of it, the initiation, actually being in the gang, and leaving the gang, which doesn’t happen often, is dangerous.

High school is one big mixing pot. You have your cliché cliques of jocks, nerds, hipsters, etc. There’s a chance that two or more different gangs may be placed in the same school, which causes a lot of drama. Unfortunatley last year, CPS lost over 30 students to gang violence. Some of these students were not even gang involved. These rates have been raising incredibly these past three years.

Reality check: This happens in suburban schools too, not just Chicago public schools.

Mr. Cortes stated that, “Even if we don’t have gang members at Vanguard, I hope this will bring awareness. Maybe students and staff will be more educated and keep out of trouble. We will inform them of the risky neighborhoods, gang colors and clothing, and so on.”

“In this economy people have more of a reason to join a gang,” says Police Liason Steve Hudgens. He went on to say, “with lack of money, citizens may find it easy to join a gang. It looks like an easy way out, and an easy way to get money.”

According to Highbeam Research, in 2004, deans of schools under District 214 were noticing more gang-like behavior in some of their students. That same year, the district passed a new code saying if a student seems to be gang affiliated, they will be watched under suspicion by the deans and security. All schools in the district have strict rules and consequences against gangs and gang violence.

Hersey’s code of conduct states, “The visibility of gang and ‘gang like’ activities/behavior cause a substantial disruption and/or material interference to the educational process as well as school activities of District 214.” It goes on to explain what passes as gang affiliation. The code of conduct states the consequences as, “a student violating the aforementioned procedures will be required to attend a parent conference with the Dean of Students and/or other administrator.
The school resource officer may be involved if necessary. Action will be determined based upon the severity of the current and previous offense(s). These consequences/interventions shall include:
· Formal warning
· Referral to outside community agencies
· Suspension
· 45 day alternative placement (for special education students)
· Expulsion
· Arrest for criminal offense”

Even with all these rules, the violence goes on. Last school year there were thirty-seven deaths and 290 shootings in Chicago Public Schools. The statistics are rising every year. Culture Captain Vanessa Cardona says, “We are trying to raise awareness of gang violence by making posters and videos. It affects our community and loved ones.”

You can also help. School should be a safe haven for students, not a fearful place. If you are personally in a gang, you can get out of it.

A former gang member told me, “Being in a gang changed my life, and it still does. Not every body knows that I’m out of it. It will follow me for the rest of my life.” The student also stated “I constantly have to be looking over my shoulder.”

From interviewing this former gang member, I got a feel of the horror of being in a gang. He told me stories, reasons, and consequences of his actions.

Don’t fret, there are so many people willing to help. If you have any concerns or information, please contact a teacher, parent, or adult. Here, at Vanguard, the staff are your friends, not enemies. Don’t hesitate to talk to them.

Staff member Ms. McCann is very intrigued by gangs. She moved here from Colorado, and had never witnessed such things. She stated that, “I think kids lose sight of what’s really important. I try to build relationships with students and help them.” She is a great candidate if you need some one to talk to!

“Once a person is actually in the gang, it is much harder to get out, but not impossible. They can talk to their school counselors, or discreetly talk to the police,” says Officer Sjodin.

There is hope!

Amy O’Neill is quite possibly the busiest person at Vanguard. She is the service coordinator, English/Dr. Oz/sociology/psychology teacher, yoga instructor, journalism consultant, and a mother to a small child…all in one day…every day. Her corky personality brightens everyone’s days. She also loves some pretty sweet movies. Ever hear of Star Wars?

Little known fact: Ms. O’Neill is the original “Pasta.” Back in the day, when she was known as Ms. Schmaranzer, she was an instructional assistant.

AMS: What is your most embarrassing moment?
ACSO: I view all of my embarrassing moments as learning experiences and teachable moments.

AMS: If you could time travel, what year would you go to?
ACSO: 1996. I lived on my own, met people that became my soul mates, adopted a lot of animals, took road trips to concerts. I had a lot of fun that year.

AMS: If you were stranded on a tropical island what are 3 things you would bring with you?
ACSO: I’d bring Jonah, coffee, and my Lancome tweezers

AMS: What is your best high school memory?
ACSO: Taking pictures at concerts and sporting events. It was kind of a long time ago, I don’t remember.

AMS: Where do you see yourself in 15 years?
ACSO: Traveling around the world to book signings for my book, ‘Leprachaun.’

AMS: What’s your dream job?
ACSO: Same as Ms. DeMeo’s but the storefront would be located in Chicago. But I’d be more involved in the radio show, and I’d take pictures of kids and pets. Also, we’d have a bakery in the store. We’d sell dishes with treats on them. There’d be a teen center there, too that plays movies and concerts. It’d be the cool place, with no bad decision making.

AMS: What’s your dug out song?
ACSO: The Sanford and Son theme song. I’m a big mess. I’m like a junk yard.

AMS: Who would play you in a movie of your life?
ACSO: Natalie Portman with a shaved head.

AMS: What dance describes you?
ACSO: Elaine’s dance from Seinfeld. If you want to know why, refer to the ‘Dug out song’ question.

AMS: What would be your last supper if you were on death row?
ACSO: I’d have my Mom’s crepes. My Polish Grandma’s home made chicken, dumplings, and pierogis. My Austrian Grandma’s stuffed green peppers. Continental bakery’s butter cookies, Koralik’s coffee, and a lime juice.

AMS: Do you have Beiber Fever?
ACSO: Yes, Team O’Neill’s name is currently changed to Team Beiber.

Idol Comes Home

It was definitely a beautiful day on September 24^th, when Mt. Prospect native Lee DeWyze returned to Arlington Park for a reprise of his sold out Homecoming concert back in May. As for the venue, there wasn’t as much “Lee-Mania!” going on amongst the people as there was during the first concert. The screaming fans were practically nonexistent this time around.

The concert itself was perfection. Lee performed like a pro and definitely worked the crowd. Lee did however look like he gained a little bit of weight from the Idol tour. During his amazing rendition of “Rocket Man” by Elton John, his D string broke, but he carried on like nothing happened and pulled it off with the greatest of ease.

He played twelve songs total. Five from his pre-Idol days, four covers from his time on Idol, two from the Idol Summer Tour, and one that was never before heard until that night. He had a full band, including 2 guitarists and a keyboard player backing him up.

The only negative comment I do have for Lee is that he needs a little more practice in front of such a large crowd. He seems slightly awkward and like he would be much more comfortable performing in front of a small coffeehouse audience as opposed to 40,000 adoring fans.

Overall the atmosphere was great, the music was phenomenal, and I cannot WAIT to check out his new album, entitled “Live it Up,” which hits stores November 16^th.

The arrival of Ms. Ngo is here! She will be here Mondays, Fridays, and half-days on Tuesdays. Her job here is "to support teachers, enhance academics, and guide teachers to learn and plan together to improve student learning," she said.

She has an bachelor's degree in international business, though she never went into business. When she first graduated, she got 4 job opportunities. Though, she took the lowest paying one because it was more community involved. Vanguard may just be the right place for her since we are so involved in the community!

"Vanguard's a very nice, bright, and friendly atmosphere. Every one starts their day with a big smile on their face," says Ngo. We all welcome Ms. Ngo and look forward to the upcoming year with her on the staff.

AMS: What's your most embarassing moment?
TTN:I walked into a glass window at the airport.

AMS: If you could time travel, what year would you go to?
TTN: I would travel back to ancient China. Growing up, I watched many Chinese soap operas, and most of them took place in ancient times. I'd like to go back and see what it was like.

AMS: If you were stranded on a tropical island, what are 3 things you would bring with you?
TTN: I would bring my family, a pair of shoes, and a knife.

AMS: What is your most memorable high school experience?
TTN: One year, my brother and I had three classes together. He was not very happy about it. He didn't want me hanging out with his friends. It turned out that I did, and I did better in class than he did!

AMS: What's your dream job?
TTN: My primary career girl is to contribute the growth of society, particularly in education right now. So, I am in my dream career.

AMS: What is your dug out song?
TTN: Anything Kenny G. He calms me, and focuses me.

AMS: Who would play you in a movie of your life?
TTN: I would.

AMS: What dance describes you?
TTN: The Waltz. It's smooth and graceful, and not so dramatic.

AMS: What would your last supper be if you were on death row?
TTN: A bowl of pho. It would have to be the chicken kind. Pho is a Vietnamese rice and noodle soup.

AMS: Do you have Bieber fever?
TTN: I definitely do not. My kids do though. I think he sings like a girl!

Cooking Club on Wednesday

Expect a new staff member in town

Expect to see a new staff member around next week in classrooms.

This upcoming Monday, November 1, there will be an addition to the staff. Ms. Thuy Ngo (pronounced Twee No) will arrive at Vanguard. There’s not much information on her as of now, but every one seems to be excited about the change.

Dr. Koralik had the pleasure of being on the interview committee for this job spot. He says, “She was the best candidate. She has experience at a Chicago school (North Side Prep on the northwest side) that has an outstanding academic reputation, and also at an alternative school.”

From the information I have gathered, Ms. Ngo will be an academic coach for staff at Vanguard and FVAS. “I’m open to any suggestions in order to improve classes, and students' education. It’s part of being a teacher. We’re always looking for change. Good change, that is,” states Koralik.

Although you may not know it, Vanguard staff meets quite frequently to discuss the curriculum. They usually meet seven times per week to discuss what's best for students in terms of curriculum. Another phrase they use for this is called "best practice."

Mr. O’Brien says, “Ms. Ngo will be improving teacher practice, and student learning here, and also at Forest View (alternative school).” He has made it very clear that her position is adjustable, and open to fit to students, staffs, and her needs.

“The reason we are getting this instructional coach is because the federal government approved a 10 billion dollar bill to save and add teacher jobs across the nation. District 214 received a grant because of this, and in return we hired her,” says Associate Superintendent for Educational Services Rosemary Gonzalez-Pinnick. Dr. Pinnick also went on to say that this will hopefully help students succeed.

Without much information, it’s hard to tell what Ms. Thuy T. Ngo will be like. So when she arrives, Meet the Staff 3 will be in full effect so we can get to know her a little better. Be sure to give her a warm welcome on Tuesday, Vipers!

An interview between Annemarie Schaefer and Natalie DeMeo took place in room 4.

Ms. Natalie DeMeo is our talented Integrated Studies and art teacher. Her Tim Burton obsession and distinct, bellowing out of control laugh are two characteristics that set her apart from the rest of the wacky staff. This expressive woman can turn any Joe-Schmo into an artist. There’s a reason why there are over 10 students who attend yoga every day. She’s part of what makes Vanguard, Vanguard. And we thank her for that.

AMS: What is your most embarrassing moment?
ND: I have one every day. I live for them, I like feeling uncomfortable.

AMS: If you could time travel, what year would you go to?
NSD: I'd go to 1999. It was the best time of my life. I was in the dating scene, I had freedom, a job, and went clubbin’!

AMS: If you were stranded on a tropical, island what are 3 things you would bring with you?
NSD: I'd bring Johnny Depp, Steven King, and a knife.

AMS: What is your best high school memory?
NSD: Going to the mailbox and finding out I got a scholarship to Western Illinois. It was such
great feeling.

AMS: What’s your dream job?
NSD: I want to own a storefront in downtown Glen Ellen that I co-own with Dr. Koralik and Ms. O’Neill. We’ll cater to babies designing their rooms, taking photos, and painting murals of them. In the back room, we’ll have a sports talk show on the radio, which Ms. O’Neill and my husband will run. Dr. Koralik will play harmonica on the front stoop. We’ll also have a bar, readings, shows by local bands, and stuff like that.

AMS: What’s your dug out song?
NSD: "Sad But True" by Metallica. Yeah, every thing is sad but true in my life.

AMS: Who would play you in a movie of your life?
NSD: Sigourney Weaver. She’s a bad ass, and was the first woman action hero in horror film in America.

AMS: What dance describes you?
NSD: Belly Dancing. I can’t tell you why; it’s not appropriate for school…

AMS: What would be your last supper if you were on death row?
NSD: I’d have a ceaser salad, good bread, rigatoni, and red wine.

AMS: Do you have Bieber Fever?
NSD: NO!!!

Vanguard unites against bullying

Lately, Vanguard has been focusing on educating students about bullying. With the suicides that have taken place recently along with all the media attention, the Culture Captains thought it a good idea to inform fellow classmates on the harms of picking on someone.

Director Mr. O’Brien says, “As a staff of almost 20 with only 100 students, we are aware of what’s going on at school most of the time. If we do notice bullying, we take action right away. Last year we even removed a student from Vanguard.”

Students are getting very involved with this issue. Some students are using their pens as weapons against the bullies. Junior Nick Strelak wrote a poem titled ‘Bullying is Pushing the Limit.’ The poem is plastered all over the halls. An anti-bullying poster made by the Culture Captains, along with signs saying ‘NO BULLY ZONE’, have been hung up all over the school. Some have even chosen to wear these signs on their backs.

Wednesday morning, the whole school watched the documentary, “Bullied,” which told the story of high school student Jamie Nabozny. Nabozny was taunted and beaten throughout his life because of his sexual preference. “If you don’t help some one that’s being bullied, then you’re just as guilty as the bully,” says Cris Richardson. He was very inspired by the film. Many students across the nation, including students Val Carley and Matt Beutel, wore purple to support the end of anti-gay bullying.

Obviously, we are all on the case about bullying. Ms. Medina-Perez states, “Bullying is a big deal to the staff. We believe that school should be a safe place, and it’s our job to keep it that way.” Well, we are all working on it!

“I’m real proud of students and their honesty about bullying. One powerful result of this campaign from the culture captains is all the courageous conversation going on around here,” said Ms. O’Neill.

Senior Julia Sovcik is spreading the word about bullying. She befriended and contacted Jamie Nabozny on the Facebook, and ended up getting a note back from him. Students can also help prevent harassment by learning more about the pain and dreadful consequences of bullying by seeing “The Laramie Project” this weekend. This is a play about Matthew Shepard who was kidnapped, brutally beaten, and murdered because he was gay during the 1990s. It will be playing October 21 at 7:00 pm, and October 22 and 23 at 7:30 pm at Buffalo Grove High School. It is highly recommended you see this passionate, timely, and moving act.

Meet the staff!

A Vanguardian interview with Annemarie Schaefer and Joseph Impastato took place on October 14, 2010, in the tech center. This is the first interview in the latest weekly blog segment called "Meet the staff".

Mr. Joseph "Pasta" Impastato is a very well-known man around Vanguard. He is very busy, and hard working at what he does. There's hardly a free minute in his day. In the 10 minutes it took to interview him, three students interrupted us to ask him for help. Pasta's job includes working with students one-on-one with assignments, coordinating and recruiting students for Music Club, soothing students and staff with the horrific printer catastrophes, charming the lunch ladies, and going on long rants about music and movies. If you see him, say hi and he'll talk your ear off.

AMS: What is your most embarrassing moment?

JVI: In junior high, a magician came to my school for an assembly. When he asked for a volunteer, I raised my hand and was called up on stage in front of everyone. He held up a dictionary and told me to close my eyes and point at a word while he flipped through the book. After that, he held up a banner that had the word I picked in bold letters. It said, ”MENSTRUATION”. The whole school laughed at me, and I think I peed my pants a little.

AMS: If you could time travel, what year would you go to?

JVI: I’d go to 1968 because that period of time changed the world. It was the biggest year in American history for movements and civil rights. Something revolutionary happened every single month of ‘68.

AMS: If you were stranded on a tropical island, what are three things you would bring with you?

JVI: I would bring an umbrella, sunglasses, and a swiss army knife.

AMS: What is your greatest high school memory?

JVI: During the prom fashion show, I was modeling a tux. I moonwalked across the entire stage and every one cheered for me.

AMS: What is your dream job?

JVI: My dream job is working here as a real teacher.

AMS: Where do you see yourself in 15 years?

JVI: In fifteen years, I want to have a house with a dishwasher, central air conditioning, a washer, a dryer, and a backyard.

AMS: What is your dug out song?

JVI: We will rock you/We are the champions - Queen. This really was my dug out song. I played baseball from ages 10 to 18. My team and I would play this song in the dug out, but then we were told to stop. So we would sing and clap our hands to the song instead.

AMS: Who would play you in a movie of your life?

JVI: Mathew Lilard, Ethan Embry, or Daniel Tosh

AMS: What dance describes you?

JVI: The white boy shuffle!

AMS: What would be your last supper if you were on death row?

JVI: Kampai. Every thing there is just awesome, dude.

Cooking Club:a beloved sequel

The title gives it away.

After almost a year-long lapse, math/English teacher Megan McCann is bringing Cooking Club back to Vanguard. Tomorrow, students that plan to stay after for Super-Stay-Late-Tuesday can give testament to the new and improved Cooking Club. Lemme tell you, it's going to be awesome. For those that either weren't here last year, or for those that just didn't feel cool enough to go to Cooking Club, you could probably still guess what the club happened to be about : food.

At a glance, it seems that you get points just for eating. That's actually pretty accurate, and you learn how to cook in the process. "I like cooking, and I really like eating, so it's nice, " TJ Kleinschmidt said. That's the gist of it, to be honest. You really just have to go, to REALLY understand it. It's perfect, to say the least.

Well, the Cooking Club's schedule is undoubtedly ALL over the school by this point, so if you're interested, definitely tell McCann.

Indiana, here we come!

Normally, the trip to Kentucky is amazing. This year, the Kentucky camping trip is a no go, unfortunately. Thanks to obnoxiously extensive floods in Kentucky and Tennesse, the staff members had to call a last minute meeting to change the trip location. The trip is now heading to Sugarcreek, Indiana. The trip at this time of the year is primarily known as the “Senior Camping Trip”, and it still gives students a perfect opportunity to experience kayaking and the great outdoors. Enjoy beautiful wildlife and scenery, all while hanging with the coolest people. Vipers left today at around 11:30 and should get back at around 3 P.M on Friday, May 7th.

“It’s a memorable experience, especially when I dropped my glasses in the creek, “ Almir Dekanovic said. These camping trips are designed for students to participate in safe, supervised activities to enhance self confidence, build relationships, and have fun. While students still must abide by school rules, this is the perfect chance to get away from stress while earning major credit. We’ll be getting there by way of the short bus and school vans, as always. Food and transportation is provided with the camping cost and teacher supervision is a constant.

“Why should you go? It’s something you can’t do around here, and it’s things that maybe you’ve never done before and won’t do again,” Joe Impastato said.

Vanguard's Water Crisis

Students are currently going through a drought, desert-wasteland style. Thanks to a cracked water main, drinking water has been put on a month long hiatus. The problem? The water main has been around since the 60’s. Not only that, but gradual corrosion finished the job of killing the water-main. Drinking fountains don’t work, and the staff bathroom is incredibly out-of-order. “We shouldn’t have to buy water, people DO get thirsty,” Valerie Carley said.

Though this water-free environment is a perfect opportunity for the coffee cart, students are tired of paying for water. Fifty cents per water bottle can add up real quick, ESPECIALLY after any physical activities. “Kids need water, you know? Some kids just can’t afford water,” Kelby Pruchnik said.

“It was supposed to be fixed by today,” staff member Scott Gustafson informed. With the water network down, and the fountains occasionally spewing the colorful yellow and brown water, there’s talk of no water until summertime, in which case that’s really ridiculous. Where are the Red Bins?

Vipers are now being introduced to the epitome of color-coordination. If you’ve somehow managed to avoid Vanguard’s newest color-coded family members, it’s advised that you read this.

New, state-of-the-art color-coded trash bins are here after about 3 years of debate. Yeah, these bins are located at just about every major student hangout and high traffic junction. The blue bins are for Recycles only. This includes plastic, glass, paper, cans, bottles, books, magazines, Styrofoam, bags, cardboard, chipboard, envelopes, paint cans, and rubber bands.

The yellow bins will hold food, food waste, food contaminated material, and personal hygiene products. There’s talk of yet another bin, actually. “I really don’t like the color choice of the bins. You would think the Recycle bin would be green, not blue or yellow. I’ve been brainwashed into the ‘Going Green’ idea and now a blue recycling bin goes against my thinking,” Natalie DeMeo said.

Should there be a compost bin as well? A student-proposed red bin would take food waste and other biodegradeable items. “I think using these red compost bins is a good idea for both the environment and the school,” Joe Impastato said.

Students have a hard time separating their junk, and that’s the truth. Don’t feel bad, though, the regulations on some of the trash-sorting are ridiculous.

Color-coded bins should greatly improve proper usage of waste management. Can students STILL fail at putting trash in the appropriate bin? Though students DO have the capacity to be lazy and/or careless, these bins will definitely make things easier. If you notice, though, there is seemingly more yellow bins than blue. Weird, considering the large list of items that belong in the blue bin.

“I consider it a win-win ; we don’t want our students leaving garbage around, and we can work on using the proper bins,” Mark Kosirog said.

Julia's Dress-Making Skills

Julia Sovcik, one of Vanguard’s newest Vipers, just recently won an award from one of her fashion competitions. A junior from RMHS, she’s been sewing since she was 3. When she was still at Meadows, Fashion Teacher Carol DeReu approached Julia and suggested that she enter this competition, and Julia excitedly entered. She then placed 2nd over at sectionals, and then followed up with another 2nd place at the State competition. While that was last year, Julia just competed again, as of February 19th. “It’s what I’m passionate about, and it sure looks good on a college application,” Julia said.

Good grief! She destroyed the competition (15+ girls) with her black, vintage-inspired prom dress. She then received a score of 97/100 and the “Most Outstanding” award. Keep in mind, folks, this dress is entirely handmade. Apparently, it took her a little over a month to sew the whole thing, even though “I barely worked it on each day,” Julia confessed.

“I hate the typical prom dress idea, to be frank,” Julia explained. “The whole, pink or white dress covered in glitter never suited me. The inspiration for my dress, was from my grandma, my ‘Nana.’”
“It was elegant with a modern edge,” Ms. Felfle said. Congratulations for being a superstar and a future contestant on Project Runway, Julia. Your competitors obviously don’t stand a chance, regardless of their “skills”. We’re glad to have you at Vanguard.

An earthquake devastated the country of Haiti, as of January 12th at approximately 4:53 P.M. 10 miles from the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince, this quake has left this third-world country in shambles. While various other countries are attempting to pick the pieces of this geographic “Humpty Dumpty,” still many other organizations and programs are trying their best to aid Haiti.

On Tuesday, January 12, 2010, the island nation of Haiti was struck with a 7.0 earthquake that has left hundreds of thousands of people homeless sick, injured, orphaned, or dead. Vanguard School decided to help.

On February 26^th Vanguard School held a 3-on-3 double elimination charity basketball tournament to raise money for Haitians in need of medical attention due to the devastation. All funds went to Doctors Without Borders, an international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors to aid people whose survival is threatened by natural disasters.

"Not to repeat myself with you, but I really like the program Doctors without Borders. Even though it's not directly helping Haiti, these doctors know what they're doing." Natalie DeMeo said.

In an effort to combine fun and fellowship, our students participated in all-day basketball games, earning credit in service learning, P.E. and quite a sweat.

"Oh man. Nobody's talking about steps to prevent this in the future. What can we do to prevent an earthquake from destroying yet another country?" Joe Impastato said. Maybe Pasta watched 2012 one too many times.

With only a ten dollar donation, our students were able to participate in the event that not only raised money but raised awareness.

Each team consisted of three players and was be co-ed (staff is encouraged to participate). The first team to score 11 points wins – but everyone wins when donating to a good cause!

Zombie Awareness Day

Though the world is “obviously” scheduled for the imminent 2012 threat, you might not live that long.
Apparently, the fear of invading zombies is at an all time high ; it’s only a matter of time before this fantasy becomes a reality.

Therefore, a group of students banded together for the cause of Zombie Awareness ; original, though not-taken-so-seriously.

“Have you seen Dawn of the Dead? How about 28 Days Later? Tell me that zombies wouldn’t be scary if they were real,” Daisy Rodriguez said.

Feeling strongly on the topic, this group of students came up with the idea of “Zombie Awareness Day”. It’s this Thursday, and includes a movie, face painting, and zombie-tag. Why, though? What is the purpose of all of this?

The purpose is to get people to take zombies a little bit more serious. For most people, this cause sounds like a joke.

Understandable ; we’ve only seen zombies in movies. According to Ms. Felfle, “This cause is incredibly creative, and seems like something Vanguard would stand for.”

Chip and Zanya pay a visit

Kloie Fetter and Val Carley are dedicated to saving Shiba-Inus this tour. As a part of their project, they brought in two rescued Shiba-Inus, Chip and Zanya, that have been a part of the Fetter family for years.

"I want to save dogs but I also wanted people to know what a special breed Shibas are," said Kloie.

"I liked the presentation because we actually got to see and play with the dogs," said Bitavia Cleveland.

State Senator will visit tomorrow

State Senator Dan Kotowski will speak to Vanguard School on Wednesday, January 20 at noon in the Forest View Education Theater.
The Senator will discuss the importance of service to the community and the need for students to work toward issues they care about.

Currently, each Vanguard student is working toward issues that are important to them. Some of the issues they are working on include immigration reform, human trafficking, animal rights, homelessness, poverty, bullying, unemployment, and zombie invasion awareness.

“I’m really excited to see a state official dedicate his time to high school students,” said Technology Assistant Elizabeth Meister.

“Anyone whose last name ends in “ski” is a good guy in my book,” said Integrated Studies teacher Bob Koralik.

“I can’t wait to meet him. It’ll be a fun day,” said Junior Zane Johnson.

Artists to embark on new project

After a brief visit with a local artist/muralist on Tuesday, seven Vanguard students are preparing to embark on a large mural project.

While on a field trip to the Museum of Mexican American Art in Pilsen, Vanguard artists got the opportunity to visit the home studio of artist Hector Duarte. Duarte also took students on a tour throughout the Pilsen neighborhood to examine a few of the murals he has crafted over the years. Duarte inspired several of our students to create a mural of their own.

Vanguard students plan to work on the mural for the duration of this school year. The mural will be 200 by 10 feet. It will be on the back of the Forest View Educational Center. Visitors to the FVEC football field will enjoy the mural once it is completed.

Duarte’s murals and other works have been featured in neighborhoods and galleries throughout the United States and Mexico.

“Duarte is truly a magical man that embraces all things real. His works are life-changing reminders of the gifts our society has to offer as well as the ills that need to change,” said Vanguard Integrated Studies Teacher Natalie DeMeo.

“I thought Duarte’s work was inspiring. I wish everyone could see it. If every community made more murals, the world would definitely be a better looking place,” said student Zane Johnson.

In addition to their own mural, Vanguard artists will contribute to a mural Duarte is working on in Michoacan, Mexico. Students will paint butterflies on interface using acrylics. These butterflies will eventually be worked into the mural. Artists from all over the United States and Mexico are contributing to Duarte’s mural.

In about an hour, it is officially January 4th ; in other words, the very Monday in which our vacation ends. At a home school, this normally spells emotional-doom.

Good thing we have Vanguard!

Think about what you have to look forward to ; student ID's, the brand new "Starfish" mini-tour, plus the many staff/student friendly faces that are all anxious for school.

Not to fear, your possible despair over "I CAN'T STAY UP ALL NIGHT ANYMORE!" is shared by most everyone. My advice : just be ready for another half-year of the Vanguard-craziness.

A Vanguard Visit to The Museum of Science and Industry!

Markos’s Health class and the Heldmann/Felfle Science class ventured over to the MSI on Wednesday, November 25th, for a day of “educational fun”.

… Yeah, I said it. Really, though, the group had a blast going to the Museum; especially the brand new exhibit.

“You! (The Experience)” arrived at the MSI on October 8th, and it is a hit! Explaining how your self-care affects the way your body functions, the 15,000 square-foot exhibit explores personal health and well-being. The exhibit features cutting-edge technology never before seen in a museum setting, and hosts an incredible amount of visual references; for the young and old to gawk at, of course.

Chris Pehm gladly (and graphically) explained his very memorable experience.
“Don’t dissect pregnant women,” Chris remarked. “I saw a pregnant woman that was cut into slices, so I got to see her insides. She was dead, of course, and it was to show her anatomy, but it still was really gross,” Chris explained.

The pregnant woman was just one of many visual exhibits the museum showcases. Others included things such as an organ-stretched corpse or a series of fetuses in the gestation cycle (Pregnancy). Though the “You!” exhibit isn’t suited for the faint-of-heart, or those with weak stomachs, not all of the features are disturbing. As a matter of fact, a good number of them were very hands-on.

“Mindball was the BEST,” Mr. Heldmann said. Mindball was just one of the many activities that were available to students, all of which were mind-blowing. “Get in the Action” involved trying a few moves with a virtual basketball coach, while another activity allowed you to send your pulse to beat along with MSI's 13 foot “Giant Heart”. Yet another feature actually aged your face and voice by 30 years! The new favorite, though, was definitely Mindball. It’s an interesting game in which the more relaxed player wins, and it seems like a great way of seeing who’s stressed.

Right from the get-go, nothing but good words were spoken about the “You! (The Experience)” exhibit, and it’s easy to imagine why. Being less of a typical museum exhibit and more like an amusement park attraction, students were glad to have been part of the trip. This totally sounds like an advertisement, but this is all for your benefit. Oh, and if you’re wondering, yes, the exhibit is permanent, so there’s no rush, but it's STILL strongly suggested that you check it out.

"All Hail, Macbeth, That Shalt, Be King Hereafter!"

On November 12, 2009 twelve eager students and three of Vanguard's fine staff, Ms. DeMeo, Ms, O'Neill, and Dr. Koralik stepped out to experience one of Shakespeare's most exciting plays; Macbeth.(I was one of the lucky twelve who got to participate in this enriching event.) The play took place at Dominican University in River Forest.

The outing started off with De Meo driving the students around to see all the lovely architecture in the surrounding neighborhood. Along the way, we hit a couple of speed bumps, or piles of leaves which made the ride even more adventurous. The ride came to a close when Koralik told everyone to get off the bus and into the theater. When inside, the theater was packed with a bunch of students and staff from other schools just waiting to get their Shake sphere on.

After sitting in the dark and a hundred puffs of smoke going up into the air on stage, the play finally took off with a "bang." The play was filled with action. Characters in the play got shot, stabbed, and there was even a drug deal at the beginning. It also had a modern twist to a production that took place in the 1600's. The play is was about a regicide and its aftermath.

Overall, the play was pretty spiffy. I was never bored. I was a little confused from the heavy dialogue but i was always at the edge of my seat. The rest of my Macbeth go seers agreed that the play was indeed a hit. "I thought it was very well planned out; the actors did really good, and the plot was exciting" stated Julia Magnani.

"I liked the play because it was modern; It incorporated everyday issues" said Armando Garcia. When the play was over students and staff filled their bellies with some tasty food from an Elmwood Park Institution, Russell's Barbecque. It was a quaint place to eat. It had a lot of history from its olden style interior and exterior to its juke box standing against the wall. The food was great too. I used to work at Russell's so it was nice to taste their juicy chicken tenders again and savor their signature barbecque sauce.

If you didn't get to go, tough break. The group of kids that went on this outing were chosen specifically by the teachers. This group included avid readers that appreciate Shakespeare's works. Better get reading! Koralik said that he felt that this field trip was important because Shakespeare is timeless and we don't read much Shakespeare here at Vanguard. After seeing this play it did make me want to read some of Shakespeare's other works, it would be good to open up my mind to other types of literature. As I'm sure many others will agree, seeing Macbeth is an experience i will never forget.

Cuckoo For Coffee Cart

Have you checked out Vanguard’s new Coffee Cart? Well if you haven’t you definitely should. The cart has a wide range of beverages they sell including coffee, hot chocolate, and flavored tea.
Hot drinks not your thing? Coffee cart volunteers are currently working on an iced coffee drink to add to their menu. Prices won’t empty your wallet either. They charge only $2.00 for their steamy drinks.
If you bring a coffee mug from home or if you purchase one from them you can get your beverage for only $1.00! Bringing a coffee mug from home or purchasing one from them for($3.00) is a part of an effort to “go green” and help the planet. “I feel like we're really making a difference.” said Brian Thompson.
In addition to that you’ll be helping support a good cause. Every cent they earn will be donated to a local charity. Most recently they donated $100.00 to the The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Light The Night Walk on September 26.
The money will help raise funds for cancer research and patient services. The Coffee Cart is run by two of Vanguard’s finest, Adam Peterson(Team O’ Brien) and Brian Thompson(Team DeMeo). Adam and Brian showed much interest in running and getting the cart off the ground.
A Vanguard student Lisa Loeffler is one of the coffee cart’s most frequent customers and she agrees that the coffee cart is the place to be. She likes how it’s right there in the tech center, accessible to everyone in our school. She also adds, “I love it!, Brian and Adam are really nice.”

With all the hype the Vanguard coffee cart has brought your probably wondering whose bright idea this all was. It turns out that a lot of people had the idea for a coffee cart and were inspired by the success of Rolling Meadows High school’s Coffee Cart, Brewhaha.
Mr. Gustafson and Mr. Koralik were interested in starting a coffee cart years ago. They both saw the value of having a coffee cart in our school as a service learning site and also as a way of teaching students how to run a business.
So why didn’t they start a cart then? The answer is pretty simple. Forest View’s Central Administration continuously said no because of all the hazards that could possibly happen when a business is run by students, according to Mr. Gustafson. “It’s sort of a safety precaution I guess you could say,” he also added.
Despite all this turmoil, the coffee cart is up and running and its creators are already thinking about expansion. They would like to branch off into other parts of the building as a way of fundraising and providing the district employees with gourmet coffee.
Dr. Koralik also thinks that the cart will give us good “PR” (public relations). “We need to keep reminding people that we’re here,” he also stated. Another person involved in this whole “coffee cart business” is Ms.McCann. Ms.McCann joined the Vanguard staff only last year but it seems that when she arrived the coffee cart idea finally came to life after it being put on hold for so long. Ms McCann loved the idea of having a coffee cart and jokes that after seeing the cart just sitting in the tech center she didn’t want it to be “lonely” any more.
She took action and with the help of staff and students created a Coffee Cart class at the end of last school year. The class planned everything out from what kind of coffee to use to where our coffee cart would be. The class researched the coffee business including testing out recipes and taking trips to local coffee houses in our local area.
Ms. McCann said she believes that having a student-run business like the coffee cart is a motivating and engaging real life experience that students can take part in. Not only that it’s a way of getting involved in our school and shows a sense of school spirit through out.
When asked how she felt about the cart’s recent success she said ,“I’m excited and proud! It’s still in its early stages and now we’re planning on decorating the cart, finding a name, and maybe even getting business cards. She loves the idea of donating all its profits to local charites. “We’re doing something bigger than ourselves,” McCann added.
After hearing from all the teachers I decided to get the “big man in charge”, Mr. O’Brien’s opinion. He thinks of the coffee cart as being yet another opportunity to stand out and be different from traditional high schools. He hopes to see the coffee cart and its surrounding area as a calm and peaceful place where students can read, relax and maybe even have class. He adds, “I’d be willing to purchase comfy couches and chairs for the cause.”

Vanguard’s Early Morning Jog

The early morning hustle and bustle has gotten a little bit earlier this year at Vanguard. Last year, students were to be at school in their “team” (their selected morning group of students and a staff member) promptly at 8:30 in the morning. Although it was torture for most students to wake up before dinner, 8:30 AM was reasonable compared to the other district school mornings, which generally started at 7:30.

As well as starting school at 8:30 last year, physical education (more commonly known as gym) was only once a week on Fridays. Depending on weather students had morning or afternoon service decided what time during the day they had gym on Friday. If a student had morning service, he/she would have gym for one hour at either 9 AM or 10 AM. If a student had afternoon service, he/she would have gym (also for an hour) either at 12 PM or 1 PM. “Vanguard had a big break on physical ed. compared to other district schools who generally have gym every school day for 50 minutes, or in my case, Rolling Meadows High School had gym every other day for 90 minutes,” said Chris Pehm, a new Vanguard student.

Speeding up to this 2009-2010 school year, Vanguard has made some changes. No, 7:30 is not our start, (thank God, praise Allah, hail Satan, whatever floats your boat) but we are thirty minutes ahead of schedule. 8:00 AM is now the start of our day, and instead of team time being thirty minutes (8:30-9:00) it has been cut by about 60% to only ten minutes every morning (8:00-8:10). “More than anything, I miss the team time, it’s only ten minutes…so much for the bonding time,” says Rachel Conroy, a current Vanguard student.

So who decided to make these changes? It’s a combination of course, between the school and the state of Illinois. Up until this year, Vanguard had what was called a P.E. (physical education) Waiver. This allowed Vanguard to have gym only once a week as opposed to the normal state requirement of a daily physical education class (with exceptions to certain schools with block scheduling, etc.). Because the state has decided to revoke the waiver, Vanguard was forced to fit in a P.E. class everyday that school is in session. But having team from 8:30- 9:00 and classes beginning right after that, where could Vanguard fit in a gym everyday? That’s just it, the problem was obvious and fitting an extra class in just wasn’t going to happen between changing service hours, lunchtime, and class reductions. So what was school director Mike O’Brien to do? There was really only two options, let the students out later in the afternoon, or make the students come in earlier in the morning.

The verdict was in and Mr. O’Brien chose, you guessed it, start school earlier. “Vanguard made the decision to start school earlier not only to fit P.E. into the schedule, but because research has shown that exercise in the morning helps students wake up and pay better attention in class/service” said Mike O’Brien, School Director at Vanguard. “It’s just not necessary, I am more tired in the morning and running around isn’t helping,” says the frustrated Maxine Reed, a Vanguard student. The decision has been made and, as stated before, school starts a half an hour earlier every day. Gym is now a daily activity instead of a T.G.I.F. occasion, but what are the opinions of students?

“It’s ridiculous!” says a Vanguard student, Angel Colon, “I don’t mind the gym everyday, but it’s just to early for us teens to wake up.” Of all the students questioned about this change at Vanguard, most of the statements were similar to Angel’s. Of those i asked they felt that the gym requirement is fine, in fact, many students even stated that the gym time was enjoyable and refreshing, but that waking up even earlier than last year is horrible. That is unless you’re Brian Thompson, another Vanguard student who simply stated, “It’s whatever…I don’t really mind either change.” Hearing that was a change of pace compared to the usual, whining about waking up earlier. “Since the change, attendance rates are better, whether or not they’re related is not known, but it’s a good thing,” says school resource officer, Rick Sjodin.

So is it a great change? I’d say no…but is it all that bad, not really. Complaining does nothing, and personally, I’d much rather wake up 30 minutes earlier, than get out of school 30 minutes later. And I’d like to close my article before I’m interrupted by a famous rapper or politician, but bottom line, Vanguard Vipers are waking up earlier and getting their exercise. Is it right? It’s up to you.

The Final Goodbye

The final camping trip of the year has commenced. Frankfort Kentucky was prepared for Vanguard students with open arms. Not only did we form new friendships, but we also learned the value of working together as a team. Brian Thompson, Vanguard student, said, "It was a life changing experience."

The teachers at Vanguard work so hard to make sure everything runs smoothly. They make a major contribution to each and every trip. Ms. Kiratsous, Vanguard staff, said, "The trip made me feel like I was back in high school again."

To add Tedd Markos, Vanguard teacher, said, "This year's trip to Kentucky was special. We go there because it's a different atmosphere. Things are more relaxing. Many lessons were learned on Elkhorn Creek this year. It was a great time. I enjoyed rafting the rapids with my group. That was intense!"

The white water rafting was the highlight of the trip for many of the students. Not only was it a new adventure for some Vanguard Vipers, it was a chance to learn. Marisa Sneider, Vanguard senior, said, "It was a learning experience for me. I got to know people on a whole new level. I learned how to work better with others. The trip was awesome."

To add Mark Kosirog, Vanguard teacher, said, " Where is the I survived the water wars of 2009 t-shirt?"

This trip meant a great deal to so many of us. Liz Ojeda, Vanguard senior, said it best, "I'm really glad I decided to go on this trip. I have been on a couple but they don't compare to this one. Even though some of us aren’t that close at school on this trip it felt as if we were friends for years. The teamwork demonstrated on this trip will always be a part of who I am."

Art Work Destroyed

Vanguard High School has amazing art work created by students every year. Today, artwork created by Kyle Jakubowicz was vandalized. Vanguard student, Becky Leffelman, said, "Destroying ones artwork is disrespectful not only to the creator but to our school."

It is sad to see how cruel some students can be. "Kyle put so much into those paintings," said, Vanguard student, Tracy Saegebrecht. I really hope that the person who did this crude act is discovered said, another Vanguard student.

Morgan Sedano, Vanguard Student, said, "It is just so disrespectful."

Too add on Deanne Eugene said, "What goes around comes around, its called karma."

Whoever destroyed Kyle's work should be ashamed of themselves. Anyone who would go that low to destroy art is a jerk in my book.

Be Not Afraid Of Greatness

With graduation just around the corner Vanguard High School seniors are feeling the pressure to finish up classes. With all the excitement about graduating there is also fear. Krystal Vargas, Vanguard senior, said, "I'm scared of graduating". Four years ago all we wanted to do was get older, now we want to find a way to make it stop. Abraham Lincoln, once said, "The best thing about the future is that it comes only one day at a time. "

Vanguard has helped us recognize what we can accomplish. The teachers have helped us through tough times and we are sincerely grateful. Bianca LaCour, Vanguard senior, said, " I'm excited to start the next chapter of my life. I feel honored that the teachers at Vanguard are helping me graduate on time. Finally graduation is just around the corner. "

Adding on Sarah Jackson, Vanguard senior, said, " I'm really upset about having to leave Vanguard. I have been here for so long it feels weird that it is almost over. But the possibilities of college make me excited about starting this new chapter of my life. I will miss what I have to leave behind but I will embrace the future with open arms."

Many of us thought graduation was not even a possibility. Vanguard made it a reality. Vanguard student, Marissa Sneider, said, "I'm sad about graduation but I am also happy. Vanguard is like a second family but its time to move forward."

Seniors of 2009 have bright futures awaiting them. Though fear may strive within us so does hope. We are growing up and it is scary, but it is reality. Liz Ojeda said it best "I'm scared of graduating. Next month I'm done. High school went by so fast. I am scared but I am not going to let my fear stop me from doing something with my life."

Just like Family

Teachers at Vanguard High School mean the world to so many of their students. Through the good and bad times they have stood by us. Vanguard student, Liz Ojeda, said, "The teachers at Vanguard changed my life for the better. They made me realize that school doesn’t have to be hell. They understand me like no one else. They are my family."

To add on Vanguard student, Chris Carter, said," My team leader is like a secondary father. If I lost mine I know that he wold be there."

Vanguard is a community of students coming from various District 214 schools. It is more then just a school it is big crazy family. Vanguard student, Cheyenne Reyna, said, "Ms. McCann is my team leader. She listens when I have a problem. She connects with me on a level that no one else does."

To add on Vanguard student, Becky Leffelman, said, Mrs. Demeo is the teacher I am closest with. She actually sits with me at lunch and we have conversations. She had taught me so much about life and art."

The teachers at Vanguard are more then teachers they are friends. When it seems like the whole world is falling down on us they're right there helping us up. Vanguard student, Maria Bahena, said, "If Mr. Kain would have given on me I would have dropped out. Because of his patience and unfaltering faith in me, I am graduating. I am glad he didn't give up on me."

The After Effects

Out of fifty-nine female staff and students at Vanguard School fourteen of them responded about their experiences with abuse in a relationship. "It's disturbing to see how badly some young women are treated in society today," said, Vanguard student, Maxene Reed.

Vanguard student, Evey Dudek, said about a previous abusive relationship,"Our breakup was us getting into a fistfight in an empty parking lot, it was so bad his friends had to pull him off me. It was a good basic summary of how our relationship was."

Jane Ball, who counsels women who are involved in domestic violence cases, from the agency Life Span said, " Emotional abuse can be the most damaging to women. Some women tolerate emotional abuse for years. They feel they are stuck in the relationship." An anonymous Vanguard student said, " My boyfriend always ignored me or put me down. He treated me as if I was lower then him. It made me feel like I wasn't good enough for him."

A Vanguard student said, " My boyfriend was so sweet at first. He would walk me home and buy me things. When I found out I was pregnant I moved in with him and that’s when everything started to change. We started getting into fights. It became physical. He used to punch me in my legs, pull my hair, push me, and put a pillow over my face. One time he threatened to kill my baby. I used to be scared of him. I would hide in the closet. But now I know that I am not taking crap from no one, especially a guy."

In Hollywood things aren't as glamorous as they appear to be. Last month recording artist Chris Brown assaulted his girlfriend music star Rihanna. According to FOXnews.com, "Brown allegedly tried to shove Rihanna out of the car, began punching her even as blood filled her mouth. And then police say he bit her. When Rihanna called her assistant to tell her to have police come to her home, Brown allegedly threatened to kill her." Everyone is talking about this case of domestic violence because it involves two famous artists. The sad thing about this situation is that it happens everyday to women all over the world and that's the depressing reality.

An anonymous person from Vanguard School when asked how the abuse affected her life said, " It made me stronger. I notice the signs in other women and try to help them. It helped me make better choices in future relationships."

Many girls that are or have been in abusive relationships feel as if it was there fault. An anonymous Vanguard student, said, " I felt like I was a loser, like I was nothing. It really affected my self-esteem."

To add on another Vanguard student, said, "I think about it a lot and it just makes me feel helpless sometimes."

Jane Ball, a counselor at Life Span, said, "Domestic Violence is all about power and control." "We started dating last February and everything was fine. Then he just changed and started getting violent. Then he hit me, and all I really remember is feeling scared because I didn't know him really well or what he was capable of," said a Vanguard about a previous abusive relationship.

Less than 20 percent of battered women sought medical treatment following an injury."

Violence against women is considered normal behavior in many countries. It affects the lives of women worldwide. It violates the human rights of women and often results in serious injury or death. A lot of the time justice does not prevail, violence does. Behind all the statistics are real women. Every second of every day these women are crying out. We need to lend our ears to the cause.

Jim Anderson receives District 214 Distinguished Service Award

For the past eleven years, Jim Anderson has dedicated his time to driving a bus filled with Vanguard students. When asked if he liked working for Vanguard he said, “Yes, very much so. If I had to drive for another school I would retire. Vanguard has great staff and students.”

To many students Jim is someone to confide in. Many believe he is more then just their bus driver; he is a friend. Vanguard student Art Tarnowski said, “You can talk to Jim about anything whether it be school, cars, motorcycles, just life.”

To add on Vanguard student Evey Dudek said, “Jim is fabulous. You can talk to him about anything. Plus, he’s hilarious.”

Jim is very loyal and reliable when it comes to his job. Patrick Kain, Vanguard counselor, stated, “What I really like about Jim is he’s really flexible in the fact that Vanguard changes its program very often and he never complains about it.”

“ Jim is the kind of guy that is very much down to earth,” said Vanguard student Nikki Harper. In his spare time he takes interest in antique motorcycles, listening to Rod Stewart's record Storyteller, and eating a plate of Italian style pasta.

Vanguard students and staff appreciate all that Jim does and for his unfaltering personality. We are proud that District 214 is recognizing him for all his hard work. On behalf of Vanguard: We love you Jim and we can’t be more proud.

The Blues is one of the most profound subjects to talk, sing, and dance about. It’s known not only as a musical genre, but as a way to connect, a way to feel, and a way of life for many people around the world.

This year brings with it Vanguard’s first official mini tour in all of 11 years.

Mrs. Cuevas said, “It was an exceptional experience. It was a great opportunity to work with students on the same personal level. We’ve never had it before, but music learning is awesome. It’s one of the best times we’ve had.”

Students had a chance to participate in a great range of activities during this short 20-day period.

KC Iatropoulos said, “It was something different, something we haven’t done before.”

Students learned quite a bit about the Blues history, and how the Blues lends itself heavily to African American culture. There was lots of painting, coloring, food, smiles, and a lot of overall expression.

At the end of the tour, students rocked out in a Blues-filled show at the House of Blues. “It was a once in a lifetime experience,” Branden Martinez said. “I’m a musician, and what happened at the House of Blues is every musician’s dream.”

Myspace Removes 90,000 Sex Offenders

A considerable percentage of Vanguard students have a Myspace account in addition to the other 130 million worldwide active users. With so many sexual predators lurking on this social website authorities decided to take action. Rich Cardosi, Vanguard student said, “It’s nice to see action being taken against those who sexually abuse and exploit children.”

The website Myspace and law enforcement removed 90,000 sex offenders in the last two years. “I think it’s great that Myspace is stepping up and protecting the younger members who use the site,” said Vanguard student Ivania Chavez.

Mark Kosirog, Vanguard teacher, said, “Nobody uses Myspace anymore. Anyways, these offenders will just find new outlets to connect with others.”

Facebook is Myspace’s rival. According to guardian.co.uk ,a rep from Facebook said, “We are glad to be able to report that we have not yet had to handle a case of a registered sex offender meeting a minor through Facebook. We are working hard to make sure it never happens."

“I am glad that Myspace removed these offenders. A chance of a child getting hurt is not an option,” said Vanguard student Eric Hernandez. Myspace users need to be cautious and smart about their profile because you never know who’s looking.

"If you do have a Myspace profile you should set your profile to private," said Vanguard student KC Iatropoulos . Jobs, schools, even law enforcement can have access to your personal information on your public account and it can affect your chances of success. Think about it.

All You Need is Love

The unsettling thought of not being able to marry the person you love is upsetting to most of our Vanguard community. Being able to love someone and devote your life to him or her should be a right, not a privilege. Liz Ojeda, a Vanguard student, said, “ I think same sex couples should have every right we have.”

Divorce rates have gone sky high the past couple of years, according to the Americans for Divorce Reform Website. They stated on their website that “Probably, 40 or possibly 50 percent of marriages will end in divorce if current trends continue.” Allison Mory, a Vanguard student, said, “ It’s sad to see how people take advantage of the sacrament of marriage. These days Britney Spears gets married and divorced in less than 24 hours, and that’s OK, but if a same-sex couple wants to commit their love it's wrong.”

It's unethical that the religious views of citizens of the United States often affect lawmaking. There has been even some instances where former president George W. Bush couldn't separate his religious views from his job. The first amendment states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." If congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, then why does religion influence the way our country is run? I invite and challenge you to comment on our blog about this very topic.

“Religion has no place in government,” said Vanguard student Bianca LaCour. Religion has always collided with government and has caused “chaos” added another Vanguard student. The first amendment protects the right to freedom of religion in addition to the four other freedoms. Whether it be Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, or Non-Believers, it’s your preference, but by trying to force your religious views upon other people is wrong in the eyes of many Vanguard students.

In the public eye today civil rights continues to be an important issue. Actor Sean Penn chose to take on what some would call a risky career move. Penn chose to star in a film that challenges those who believe gays should not be allowed equal rights. This move paid off. Penn won the Academy’s Best Actor Award for his portrayal of California’s first openly gay politician Harvey Milk. As he accepted his golden statue at the 81^stAcademy Awards he said, "I think that it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren's eyes if they continue that way of support." He then added, "We've got to have equal rights for everyone."

"It was an honor that Harvey Milk stood up for what he believed in knowing the risks. He inspired a whole new generation of people," said Vanguard student Nikki Harper. On November 27, 1978 the man who pushed the boundaries was shot and killed because of his support towards the gay community. He once said, "If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door." He did not die in vain. People are not scared; they are standing up and fighting for their rights. It’s tragic to see how some people in this world interpret the possibility of equality. Milk said it best, “Hope will never be silent.”

The "My Bloody Life" Phenomenon

"My Bloody Life" was published in July 2000. Almost nine years later, its popularity hasn't diminished. This is obvious when you walk through the halls at Vanguard. Over twenty students and several staff have completed at least one book in the series.

A former Latin King, who uses the pseudonym Reymundo Sanchez to protect himself, wrote this mind-blowing novel. He writes about his tragic life and his involvement in the famous Latin Kings in Chicago.

"I keep going back and forth wondering if the book glorifies gang life for young adults," said teacher Megan McCann.

To me, gang life is glorified in society. In reality it is a life of violence and drugs with the cover of brotherhood.

Alex Ramirez, a Vanguard student said, "I have read the book five times. I think it makes people realize what gang life is really about."

Schools around the country banned the book from reading lists. Many made accusations that the book glorifies gang life. Sanchez was a Latin King for six years. He has left the Latin Kings, left Chicago, left the violence, and has written an amazing book that has touched people's lives. Sabrina Cuevas said it perfectly, "The book doesn't glorify gang life, it opens your eyes."

Ms. DeMeo, a Vanguard teacher, said, "It's one of the books that catches reluctant readers." To add on Francisco Ramirez said, "It was a good book. It was the only book I actually finished."

Patty Sanchez, a Vanguard student, said, "I think the book gives you a look into the life of a gang member and the consequences it has."

Reymundo Sanchez wrote a sequel to My Bloody Life called Once A King Always A King. He has also co-wrote a book called Lady Q with Sonia Rodriquez. Branden Martinez said, "Once A King Always A King was better than the first book."

For the winter reading incentive at Vanguard School, over ten people read My Bloody Life. It is a groundbreaking book that has intrigued many. The truth will set you free.

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

Something that takes years to stick to and dwell upon can end in a matter of minutes. It's certainly no different for the simple act of cutting hair. Yes, simple. But this act is practically life changing. A Vanguard Student decided it was finally time to make the big step. Marisa Sneider said, "I couldn't believe Robert cut it. I was expecting him to keep it."

The first thing that comes to mind when you think of Vanguard senior Robert Struggles is definitely his hair. Waist length, Robert started growing it out around the time he was introduced to Vanguard. "His hair was awesome," said Priscilla Guadarrama.

Robert donated his hair to Locks of Love. Locks of Love is a non-profit organization that gives minors the opportunity to receive hair, via selfless donors. These minors have various conditions that cause hair loss such as cancer. "By donating your hair it gives the kids a newly found confidence that is priceless," says Jackie Cimarusti.

"I guess we give gravity to something so important, something that's a part of someone. It's a major act of self-sacrifice. Robert cutting his hair was like cutting the cord," Natalie DeMeo explained.

Tom Krause once said, "Getting what you want is not nearly as important as giving what you have." I couldn't have said it better.

Thank you Robert Struggles for your generosity that is sure to inspire others.

Here's that President Obama studded-hat that I was telling you about. I've been searching everywhere for one for my brother Brian. No luck yet.

O'Neill goes to Washington

Here's the world's fanciest Starbucks in Alexandria, VA.
So the O'Neill family feels real lucky to have the chance to go to DC and witness a little history. I thought I would blog for Vanguard while I was away and share with you our trip.

Our first stop when we arrived Sunday afternoon was Alexandria, VA. We walked around a little bit--it's so much warmer than at home in Chicago.

We ate at Bilbo Baggins restaurant, a fine establishment with super friendly wait staff. The town was dead because I think everyone was on the National Mall rocking out to Springsteen, U2,Sheryl Crowe, etc. While we were eating, we watched McNabb's defeat against the Arizona. No defense for the Eagles so it wasn't really his fault but my heart aches for him nonetheless. The jukebox was playing Clapton's "Crossroads" while we were eating at Bilbo Baggins and I thought of Bobbi Felfle and our Field Hollerers.
Look, there's a Superdawg at the Midway Airport! Most of the people on the plane traveled in packs of besters. I thought for sure there would be more families but it was mainly small groups of women wearing matching Obama yellow sweatshirts on the plane.

I'm good with DC so far. Environmentally friendly buses that run on Natural Gas. I have heard their metro trains are the cleanest in all the land. I will let you know tomorrow.

I am more than shocked and thoroughly entertained by all the Obama consumerism. I have already seen five people with fancy studded Obama winter caps. Two women on the plane had costume jewelry diamond studded bracelets that spelled OBAMA. I will try to get some pix of the Obama fashions tomorrow.

Random Fact:
Did you know that Arlington Heights was named after Arlington National Cemetary? It's true. They originally called it Dunton, then Arlington and changed the name to Arlington Heights because the name Arlington was already taken.

I am impressed that Obama declared today a National Day of Service. Be proud you do service everyday, not just one day a year. Hope you're reflecting a little bit on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and enjoying the time off.

Rod R. Blagojevich Arrested

Rod R. Blagojevich is the 40th governor of Illinois. He was elected in 2002 and was re-elected in 2006. On December 9, 2008 he was arrested for attempting to sell President-elect Barack Obama’s U.S. Senate seat among other accusations.

This scandal has affected teachers and students at Vanguard School in many ways. Bobbie Felfe, school librarian, said, “When so many questions of character exist, you can't govern effectively, so anybody who’s a person of high character would step away from the job. You get stupid when you get greedy.”

Robert Struggles, a senior, said, “When people in power are corrupt, not only do we feel the effects of their individual acts, but they ruin something much more important. They destroy the fabric of society as they sew distrust into the lives of their people.”

Some of the students and teachers are upset with the fact that the man who is supposed to be helping our schools is stealing from them. Tedd Markos, a teacher, said, “Rod Blagojevich took money from Illinois education funds. He said that he planned to add more slot machines in Illinois casinos to compensate for the education fund that he took from. He’s a crook.”

To add on Liz Ojeda, a senior, said, “I can’t imagine why people would vote for a man that is clearly corrupt. He is a great example of someone who let’s power get to his head. It disgusts me that he has been stealing from our kid’s education funds. I hope they lock him up for a long time.”

Chicago is known for its corrupt politicians. Ardis Anzalone, Vanguard secretary, said it perfectly, “It’s a shame that Illinois can’t get out of the shadow of these corrupt politicians (like Rod’s the 1st?!) project to the rest of the country. Who can we trust at the state level? "

Twilight "A Blood Sucking Love Story"

Twilight is not only sweeping the nation but sweeping Vanguard School. Seventy-two students and several staff members endured two hours and one minute of the latest fad on opening day on Friday, November 21. Students earned their ticket to the show by each finishing a book and doing a book talk with a staff member.

The movie Twilight is the new teen craze this year. Based on the book Twilight written by Stephanie Meyer it is a modern day love story with a twist:

a young human girl risks everything to be with her vampire boyfriend Edward.

The series of four books has sold more than 25 million copies worldwide. The movie generated an estimated 70.5 million dollars for its opening weekend, according to imdb.com.

With all this buzz about how extraordinary the movie is, some people think otherwise. Becky Leffelman, a Vanguard student, said, “The way the director portrayed the movie was nothing like the book and the acting was horrible!”

To add on Kelby Pruchnick, a fellow Vanguard student, said, “I read all four books. I think the movie was a real big disappointment.”

Ms. O'Neill, a teacher at Vanguard, read two of the books in the series and was also disappointed. "I thought it was real funny. Like really bad funny. Kinda like Leprechaun."

Many say the book is always better than the movie. Contrary to this belief, some people disagree. Chris Carter said, “I liked the movie so much better than the book.”

The majority of students that didn’t read the book really seemed to enjoy the movie. Sarah Jackson said, “The movie was “fabtabulous.”

To add on Thomas Vamvakos said, “ The character Alice is hot and it had a good storyline.”

Some students liked the movie so much they actually want to read the book. Izzy Pasillas said, “The movie was great, I can’t wait to read the book.”

I think that a lot of people that read the book (including myself) had too high of expectations. A wise person once told me that when you read a book and then go see the movie, you have to go in with an open mind. Go see Twilight in theaters now and see what you decide.

Team Koz supports grad into the next chapter

Kristine Verdico came to Vanguard High School from Hersey High School on December 5, 2005. She describes herself a girl who desperately needed guidance in her past. Today, she is now a driven young woman striving for greatness.

Verdico is always up to a challenge such as camping and Upward Bound . There is always something new and exciting she wants to accomplish.

“In Kristine I see a sense of curiosity, a desire to learn. And I respect that. It will serve her well throughout her life,” said teacher Robert Koralik.

Verdico is appreciated and will be missed by her peers. “Kristine always tells you it straight up, she doesn’t hold things back. We have gone through a lot of issues that we have overcome. She has only been my friend for a short time but in that short time, she has had my back,” said Becky Leffelman.

With Verdico’s graduation day only a few short weeks away, she said, “I am going to miss everything. Vanguard has become my second home. Vanguard has taught me a lot about myself.”

Verdico hasn’t wasted anytime as for the future ahead of her, she said, “After I graduate, I’m starting second semester at Harper. Maybe after Community College I can go to a University to pursue a career in sign language.”

Before Verdico came to Vanguard she was a different person, she said. “I didn’t care about school but when I came to Vanguard that changed.”

Teachers make Vanguard what it is. Verdico said, “All the teachers have had a lot of influence on me in one way or another.”

She added on “Dr. Koralik has had life experiences and has so much insight. He has taught me so much.”

Class discussion is something Verdico will take with her in her life after high school. “Ms. DeMeo taught me to look at things from a different perspective.”

“My team leader “Koz” has always been very supportive of me.” At Vanguard a Team is like a family. Verdico said, “My team is Team Koz. Some of the students and teachers have said we are very close. I am so proud to be a part of such a wonderful team. I am going to miss them all.” Kristine is described as the team mom by fellow team members.

On behalf of Team “Koz” whatever road Kristine decides to take we will support her.

We will miss you Kristine.

Cooking Club 101

Food, and eating, is very much only second nature to all people around the globe. 9 times out 10, opening the fridge and splurging is only a habit, not a privilege. Let's say that you like eating, and think that its necessary. Let's also say that you just happen to be bored on Tuesday, 2:00-3:30. You also think having points would be nice.

If you meet the criteria, you should definitely check out Cooking Club.

No one is better qualified with the honor of leading then food-obsessed Ms. McCann. With fond memories of learning to cook at home and school, she seems to be the silver lining that arrived just in time.
"Food has always been part of my life." It's hard to put into words that kind of fervor and passion she so proudly radiated."My sister and I would bicker about what food we would bring on family trips. OH! Miss Hazelbaker, the nicest teacher ever, played a big part in cooking," she explained.

"Cooking over eating? Cooking, defnitely," Lisa Loeffler said.

But what if you don't cook?

Josh Vazquez simply said, " I sometimes cook, but I'm mainly here for the food." Regardless of whether or not you cook, the fact is that EVERYONE eats.

Going to Cooking Club can beat up your senses. It's hard not to reel in horror/awe when you first enter. Being assaulted by the smell of vanilla, the taste of peanut butter cookies, watching people inhumanely sing and dance, listening to Van Halen's Panama, and just the overall sight of craziness is enough to drive anyone bonkers.

Be it points or a cheap thrill, the people that make cooking club what it is have their reasons for going. Think, though; you'd be a chump not to get points for eating.

Pepon, Pompon, Pompeon, Pumpkin!

From the Greek Pepon, to the French Pompon, and the British Pompeon; What DO they all have in common? All of these are different terms for George Washington’s favorite fruit, the incredible edible…

Pumpkin!

Ranging anywhere from less than a pound to over 1,000 pounds, this piece of produce can be boiled, baked, steamed, roasted, and most importantly, carved. Also, Pumpkins have three different color stages; first it would be green, and then it’s yellow, and finally orange signals the opportune time to carve. Pumpkin carving took place on the 28th and 29th of October for those that signed up ahead of time, via sign up sheet or Ms. DeMeo.

“Kos was actually relating the pumpkin price rise to a way of exemplifying supply and demand,” said Ms. Meister started off with a visual running start; apparently she wanted to get the worst of the pumpkin news off her chest first. “It was quite expensive, ever since the price of pumpkins doubled virtually everywhere,” she stated.

And while last year one group of students got 2 days of carving, this year it branched out to TWO groups of students getting two separate days. This means that student carvers have about 4 and a half hours of putting an image on the face of this pumpkin.

“Any image that won’t be deeper then 2 inches, anyways,” said self-proclaimed virtuoso Derek Hoying. When found, he was beating the squash like it owed him him money or something, and yet he was still able to explain his finesse with the small knives.

Jackie Cimarusti added, “It’s a great way to get stress out.”

While it may seem tiring, Ms. DeMeo explained that on the whole, it was a lot more time consuming then it actually was tiring. “I’ve only been going at this pumpkin for… 4 hours?” she told me.

Pumpkin carving IS an art, like it or not. If you’re a newbie learning the ropes or a veteran looking for another round, remember the three simple words Amber Wren used to talk about the pumpkins.

“Dirty, itchy, fun,” Wren said.

Students cast their ballots

Vanguard students cast their votes for political leaders today in homemade booths. An overwhelming victory for Obama shook the halls at school this afternoon. Amy O’Neill and Tom Heldmann, two staff members, put together this outlet so that the students voices could be heard. “It’s always fun to see what the kids think,” said Heldmann.

The War on Terror affects many. Students and staff alike took it into consideration as they cast their votes. “Our troops are dying. If Obama wins the election, he will bring an end to this war,” said Izzy Pasillas.
Kelsey Costello added that she voted for Obama because “Obama wants to end the war and McCain wants to keep it going.”
Some students have friends and family currently serving in the military. Sarah Jackson said "I miss my boyfriend and want him to come home safely.”
The economy plays a major part in voting. Some say that the economy has not been this bad since the Great Depression. Among some of those who have suffered financial loss are participants in the stock market, the housing market, and businesses that have gone bankrupt. Unemployment has risen and manufacturing is down, which has discouraged many.
“I come from a middle class family and I feel its time for the government to help the people who actually need help. I am a single mom and I want my son to grow up in a good economy,” said Liz Ojeda.

Dawn Garcia, a Vanguard teacher, said, “As far as the economy goes, I believe that I as well as my family and friends will fare better with Barack Obama in office."

Joe Impastato, instructional assistant, said, “I personally believe Obama is a better candidate. I believe if he wins, politics will be a better place when I have kids.”

Freedom of and from religion is important to so many people, and often in politics it influences leaders' decisions . “Religion has no place in government, I believe. Lately decisions have been made on the base of Christianity. I believe a woman has the right to choose. Obama is pro-choice so I support the lesser of two evils,” said a Vanguard teacher.
Many say that Barack Obama is young and inexperienced, but to so many he represents real change for our country. “I support Obama because he is a minority and so am I,” said Krystal Vargas. It is said Obama not only brings brilliance to the table but also his diversity. If he wins the election he will be the first black president in American History. The students of Vanguard have spoken and Barack Obama won the school election.

No matter the outcome of the real elections we hope for the best. As corny as it sounds, whether we like it or not, change is coming,” said Morgan Sedano.

Vanguard Election Results:

President: Barack Obama won with 80% of the vote.

State Senator: Susan Garrett won 100% of the vote.

U.S. Senator: Dick Durbin won with 50% of the vote.

State Representive: Elanie Kritz won with 60.8% of the vote.

Congress: Dan Seals won with 82% of the vote.

Devil's Lake

On a cold stormy night three fine fellows played a round of cards. Keep in mind Egyptian War is most certainly not the game to play in hushed tones. Truth to tell the combination of crickets chirping, the rain drip dropping, and the constant fear of a raccoon break in is a hearty recipe for staying awake. And that’s not saying anything about the cold. You’re camping when you find your sleeping bag unable to zip and then simultaneously loose feeling in your fingers and toes.

The second camping trip of this school year went underway as of Wednesday October 24, 2008. There is a tradition of making a cohesive group effort to make the most random unthinkable sentence possible. Like, “Devils ladies split personality disorder ruins picnics whenever I eat the kangaroo babies rotten corpses”. If you put some thought into the concept though it’s a great way to check attendance. Since each camper put in one word if someone is missing you know.

As painful as it sounds the trip going there was a good three hours worth of boredom, to put it nicely. With about two and a half feet of breathing space between you and the next smelly dude the lack of technology made it all bittersweet.

The Vanguard camping trip is not just your average field trip to the local zoo. The lack of bathing, the raccoon’s that seemed to stalk the tents, and the food shortages didn’t seem to bother anyone. It’s safe to say that even at the beginning everyone felt like they were apart of something bigger.

The sleeping experience was interesting (that’s if you even want to call it sleeping.) Freezing accompanied by your tent mates snoring can bring about the admiration of Eskimo’s. Staying up can help you realize how pure camping is but I think everyone yearned for some shut-eye.

"Rock climbing was a major part of the camping trip," said Patrick Kain. If you’re thinking about your average amusement park rock-climbing wall you’re sadly mistaken. It’s definitely a thrill that’s impossible to duplicate. These rocks are formations of stone that will always shape the flow of tourism at Devil’s Lake. Devils Lake is one of the most visited national landmarks in America. Now that’s deep.

Waking up early marked the end of something unforgettable and signaled the long ride home was here at last. “With the music blasting, cards sprawled all over the floor, and everyone passed out it was a great ending to the trip," said Jackie Cimarusti.

The New Teacher On The Block

Megan McCann is 24 years old and looks no older than most of her high school students. Her laugh is infectious, her smile contagious, and her love of teaching is unfaltering. She is a breath of fresh air that has been long awaited.

Ms. Megan McCann was born on December 18, 1983 and raised in Indiana. Megan graduated from West Field High School and than went on to the University of Dayton. She received her bachelor’s degree in secondary education in both Math and English. Ms. McCann just recently joined the Vanguard staff. She currently resides in Arlington Heights with her boyfriend Tim and her dog Bella.

Ms. McCann enjoys kicking back while reading a good book. She knits blankets, she cooks, she eats like there’s no tomorrow, and “there’s nothing better than good wine, good food, and good people,” she said.

Her family is a major part of her life and she loves being around them as much as she can. One of the main reasons she chose Vanguard for employment was to be closer to her parents who live in Indiana. Another big part of her family is her dog. Her dog Bella has her own blog due to the fact that Ms. McCann has an "unhealthy obsession" with her.

The new teacher on the block is young but it hasn’t seemed to affect her teaching skills. Erik Hernandez said, “Ms. McCann is so awesome she helped me finish my math class. ”

Cassandra Kossick, a member of Team McCann, said, “She is my favorite teacher.” She is well liked and very much appreciated by many students.

Not just another pretty face, Ms. McCann is considering getting her master's degree soon. She admires Dr. Robert Koralik and says that he is a mentor to her. She’s excited for the upcoming election, but would not reveal which candidate she wants to cast her vote for, though she thinks Barack Obama will win the election. She said she gets upset with “Unmotivated, lazy, grumpy, students that think they can graduate high school when they do nothing to help themselves,” she said.

Ms. McCann is not just a teacher. Students say she is someone you can confide in, a friend, a shoulder to lean on, and a big kid at heart. She sings along to “Don’t stop Believing” by Journey, she rocks to Bon Jovi, she heckles to The Wedding Crashers, and she religiously watches The Office. For the short time she has been here so far, according to staff and student alike, she has made an impact.
"Megan has a better understanding of education than many teachers with many more years of experience. She is the best thing happened to Vanguard in along time and we have to do whatever it takes for her to stay here," said Dr. Koralik.
